Canuck moving to L.A., seeks Vstrom any size $3-4k

Greetings! My name is Robert. I'm an old fart (52) Canadian, born in Toronto, lived most of my life in Yellowknife, currently living in metro Vancouver BC. I moved to California in 2008 and learned to ride at the ripe old age of 45. Got an old metric cruiser, and over 5-ish years, I rode it into the ground in both CA and AZ. I've been bike-less for 2-3 years now and back in BC, but I'm soon moving back to Los Angeles to again work for the company that hired me back in '08.

I'll be commuting etc. with whatever new bike I get in CA, but I also want to do longer tours, and I want the option of going on unpaved roads occasionally. (Lots of old ghost towns off the slab in AZ that I'd love to visit, for example.) I've talked to a lot of rider friends, and the consensus I've heard back is "Vstrom, seriously." So I've been looking at Los Angeles Craigslist a lot to see what's there. Looks like for my budget ($3-4k), there are options among 2003-11 650s and 2003-07 1000s. I'm a big guy (6'1", 260 lb.), so I'd probably be OK with the tradeoff of beefier engine vs. heavier bike with the 1000, but I'll definitely try both. I'm still waiting for work visa paperwork to be done, but once I'm in L.A., I'll be looking at bikes for real. (For those who know L.A., my office will be near Warner Center, so I'll probably get a place to live somewhere in the San Fernando Valley.)

I'm reading through lots of threads here to learn what I can. But right now, I have a few questions to help me in my quest. Thanks in advance for all your help!

  • Other than dealers, where should I look other than here and Craigslist for a good used Vstrom?
  • When looking at a Vstrom, are there any specific things I should watch for? Like, "The 200X's flibbertygibbet sometimes goes wonky, so look at it for cracks" or some such?
  • Are there any particular vintages I should avoid?
  • I'm a total math/computer nerd, so I put a bunch of Craigslist entries into Excel and crunched some numbers. Seems that on average, a 1000 has about a $470 premium vs. an equivalent 650. Seem reasonable?
  • Speaking of 1000 premium, how much heavier is it than a 650? The Wikipedia articles for each say the 1000 is 236 kg/520 lb wet, while the 650 is 220 kg/485 lb wet. Is there really only a difference of 16 kg/35 lb?
  • I'd want hard top and side cases. If I get a bike without cases, what's a typical price for a set of bags that'd be waterproof but not insanely expensive?
  • I'll definitely have a mechanic check any bike I'm about to buy before closing the sale. Does anyone know any good mechanics in the San Fernando Valley who are very familiar with Vstroms?

Good luck, see some info inline below

[*]Other than dealers, where should I look other than here and Craigslist for a good used Vstrom?
ADVRIDER, cycletrader.com
[*]When looking at a Vstrom, are there any specific things I should watch for? Like, "The 200X's flibbertygibbet sometimes goes wonky, so look at it for cracks" or some such?
I am always worried about how other "mod" their bikes so pay attention to what addons are there and how they appear to be done.
[*]Are there any particular vintages I should avoid?
Check out wikipedia, there were changes over the years and some may be important to you, like ABS became an option in 2008 on the 650 and included after 2011.
[*]I'm a total math/computer nerd, so I put a bunch of Craigslist entries into Excel and crunched some numbers. Seems that on average, a 1000 has about a $470 premium vs. an equivalent 650. Seem reasonable?
Depends on your needs. I run 260 lbs and feel no need for the bigger motor.
[*]Speaking of 1000 premium, how much heavier is it than a 650? The Wikipedia articles for each say the 1000 is 236 kg/520 lb wet, while the 650 is 220 kg/485 lb wet. Is there really only a difference of 16 kg/35 lb?
I think that is correct, yes.
[*]I'd want hard top and side cases. If I get a bike without cases, what's a typical price for a set of bags that'd be waterproof but not insanely expensive?
There are a lot of options and often people sell them here used. but you can go from a few hundred to 1.5K new. for a few hundred is the 22 liter givi cases and racks.[*]I'll definitely have a mechanic check any bike I'm about to buy before closing the sale. Does anyone know any good mechanics in the San Fernando Valley who are very familiar with Vstroms?
can't help there, sorry
