Considering V-Strom 1000

Hello,

somehow V-Strom 1000 (from K4 onwards) came into consideration.

We need capable bike for everyday use and two up touring and in first place there was list of wanted models:

1.R1150GS

Unfortunately those are gettin' old and its hard to find good example without spendin' significant amount of money. Also maintenance of those putting me off to. Cost and systems that need different approach. Lookin' on forums, it seems lot detailed and time consuming. I think Strom is much more easier both for DIY and wallet.

2. Caponord 1000
Must be honest i like Caponord more the Strom. There is electrical issues and some fuel lines problems with Capo. I just want to do regular and preventive maintence and ride so i left Capo for the sake of piece on mind.

Then Strom... Well its just came as a reasonable and rational choice . Not expensive, capable, easy to work and service without some faults from factory. As i heard there is some problems with clutch baskets rattling but it doesn' put me off. It will haul two adults with full luggage over bad roads, enough power to overtake. When i think of owning it i gives me that "safe bet feeling"'.

Im planing to run GPS and two Hella Micro De Lights (2x55W) and im not shure about power output of Strom alternator. Can it handle? I would really be happy to have serious aux light, not some LED's and chinese crap.

Feel free to coment my picking list and give some feedback

If you are not planning to do a lot of 2 up riding with full luggage take 650 under consideration. Specially the new one. You might be surprised. And I've had first Vee (twice), then 5 Wee and Glee now. Never looked back towards Vee.

Do you mean the L4 DL1000A? That is the new version starting in 2014. Highly recommended. K4 = 2004.

Thinking about first generation from 2004. Because its updated little bit.

We will do two up alot with full luggage and i love character of 1000.

The electrical power output on the Vee (2002 to 2011) is substantially higher than the Wee or Wee2 DL650s. Having electrical power available is not likely an issue unless the stator fails.

However, the Vees have a host of issues. Stator failure, clutch basket issues, sprocket wear, throttle body sync issues, and more. There is a probably a thread dedicated to summarizing the issues someone around here. And they are probably summarized much better and more completely than I did. All the issues are fixable, but finding one that has already been fixed would be better.

The 2014 DL1000 is a far superior machine and the 650 are much better sorted out from the factory and far more capable than you might first think just based on the number of cc. I know some are probably tired of reading this, but my Wee pulled a trailer riding two up, with full luggage from WA state to southern CA. The only problem was keeping it below 80 mph on the interstate.

I miss my Wee and recently learned that it suffered it's third mishap with the new owner. It's hiding under a tarp right now hoping to be rebuilt before the new owner's wife finds out.

2008 and later 650s have the same power output as 2003-2012 1000s, 400W.

See #11 at Basic V-Strom Wiring 101

There is an error in the spec sheet of 2012+ 650s. They have 400W, not 375W. I had a 2012 that had more output than my 2007 did. Besides, the part numbers on the stator and rotor are the same between 2008+Wees and all Glees. Speaking of errors. The links below include 2007 models but show K8 and K9 which are 2008 and 2009 model years.

32102-17G10 ROTOR ASSY $245.15
32101-17G11 MAGNETO STATOR $242.52

Those parts are different on the earlier Wees that had 375W.

The rotor on the 2007 is part number 32102-17G01.
The stator is 32101-17G00 replaced by 32101-17G01

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

3 Things

1. You are on the best Vstrom Information site there is. If you havea general question, try the search bar. It will lead you to a lot of information.

2. DL 650 and 1000s are some of the best no nonsense, reliable, inexpensive, relatively easy to maintain, do close to anything thrown at it, pack mules ever to have had 2 wheels strapped to a mid or liter sized engine.

3. If you have a question and the Google search bar fails. If other sites dedicated to Vstroms or ADV type motorcycles fail, your answer is 99.9% likely to be answered by GreyWolf. If he doesn't know, you're asking about something other then a Vstrom.

I have ridden with my wife (115 lbs) and light luggage (beer) on the back of my 2013 DL650 through the NC mountains and had no problems bombing up serious highway inclines (going north to Blowing Rock, anyone? GREAT climb).

As far as electronics, I run a GPS, LED aux lights, a USB charger which I typically have my helmet and phone plugged into, as well as Oxford heated grips. I installed a voltage meter on the "dash" as I too was worried about the power draw, but while riding the voltage has never dropped below 14V with everything running. Sitting at idle, it floats at around 13.1V when I'm charging my phone or something.

The big bonus for me is a rock solid V-twin. I have shopped BMWs a couple time now and I get to the point where I'm all excited about the bells and whistles and then I imagine of the the bells breaking. And how much that would cost. At that point I thank Jesus for my V-twin and ride it back home, bell and whistle-less.

I did replace my front sprocket with a one-tooth increase which sacrifices a small amount of torque on the low end, but really opens the thing up at highway speeds. 90MPH has never been more comfortable!!

Heated gear with aux lights is going to be your biggest problem. Do you run heated gear? I had to unplug my heated pants from my heated jacket because the light was fading and my gear was luke warm. If you can go with LEDs you will get better performance with lower power, but the good ones are costly.

GPS is a low power consumer and usually switch to battery when the system is strained, only to charge once the system has capacity again.

idk about capo 1000 but, the capo 1200 is a very good mc. buddy just bought one over the phone from texas dealer for $10k. $5k off list. plus extra $500 to ship to his driveway, columbus ohio. it is a beautiful bike. if it is half as good as it looks, it'll be a great bike. as far as the gen 1 v-strom is concerned, it is not a bad choice. i like my 05 DL1. ive owned it for 10yrs. now. showing 125k on the clock with no problems. and the gen1 DL1 has a few things that the new ones dont have. for example, larger fuel tank, higher red line and a 6th. gear OverDrive trannie. extra lights IMHO, are not needed due to suzuki has always been known for having the best headlight(s) in the industry.
