Question for Vee owners

I'm in the market for an adventure bike and with my budget have narrowed it down to three bikes. New '14 Vee, new '14 Triumph Tiger Explorer, or a used '14 BMW R 1200 GS with 7k miles. I've never owned a non Japanese bike, or anything other than a sport bike. I love the style of the BMW, but concerned about high costs of ownership. The Triumph is a great looking bike with a few features that the Vee does not have, namely cruise control. The Vee seems a bit vanilla, but the price is significantly less and I know what to expect from Suzuki. I owned a Hayabusa for a few years and currently own a GSXR1000, both have been daily drivers and bulletproof. So I figure it's no better than to ask current Vee owners, do you wish you would have went with either of the other two bikes mentioned? Great site by the way. Lots of support and information.

While I would love to have cruise control and think that both of the other bikes are very popular with their followers I think that V-Stroms are amazing bikes; the 2014+ DL1000 more so.

Now I have only had my 2015 DL1000 for 5 months and only have 23,000+ km or a bit more than 14,000 miles I have no interest in the other bikes.

One little thing is that I think the Stroms are not so much about the bikes a they are about riding. One of the most amazing thing about the Stroms is that they basically disappear under me and it is just me, riding.

Cruise control can be added to V-Stroms. I added a CCS100 to my Wee and a Rostra to my Glee.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thanks for the input. I'm looking for a 2up capable bike, but not ready to move to a heavy tourer. With so many bikes in the street/adventure class, my head is spinning. The price tag on the Vee has me leaning in that direction.

There is a good letter in the January "Motorcycle Consumer News" from a guy taking the magazine to task for loving BMW and ignoring their dependability issues. It seems his final drive puked at highway speeds and nearly cost him dearly by oiling the rear wheel. Then the friendly BMW dealerships put him in a 5 week line for repair....while he was on the road.

My choice is not even on your short list but I would dam sure by a Japanese bike if you venture far from home. So Strom it is. Mine was pretty well indestructible.

My wife and I are both "full-size" people and had no trouble traveling with lots of luggage on a 650 Strom. I traded off a 1250 Bandit between Stroms because I didn't need the power. I changed the tires when they wore out. Other than gas and oil, that was it.

aint that the truth. generally speaking, euro bikes are maintenance happy. otoh, i bought 05 DL1 new. now showing 125k on the clock with no problems. go figure.

i test rode the '15 tiger explorer - too big and bloated; the '15 tiger 800 - fun, but not exactly what i was looking for in a second bike, already owning a 650 strom; and the '15 GS. Ahh, the water cooled GS. I hate to admit it but I loved the thing. I also tested and almost bought a super ten. But, in the end I settled for the '14 Vee. Why? Well for starters I'm a cheap bastard and I got it for almost 1/3 the cost of the GS and thousands less still than the excellent deal I could've gotten on the tenere. Huge difference in price. And the Vee is still an excellent bike. Big pluses are the reliability expectations, low cost of maintenance, lighter weight, non-poser image...

I had a R1200GS which I enjoyed before it had a final drive failure at approx 40,000 miles. I did feel top heavy at times.

The test ride I had on the Tiger 800 was comfortable, a tad under-powered compared to the BMW, but worried about available dealerships in my area, the nearest 100 miles to the North.

Bought the DL1000 cuz I fell in love with the motor and it's flick-ability.

If I was buying new I would go with the DL650, its somewhat lighter (I think around 60 pounds depending on the years you compare) and the only place you miss the power is well beyond most posted legal speed limits, so its a wash. Additionally, you will go much further on a DL650 on one tank. I ride frequently with others on DL650's and my Vee can chase them down easily when we start looking at speeds over 70 MPH and they always get a hoot out of it but they get the last laugh when we see a gas station because they know the mighty Vee must quench it's thirst at about every 140 miles or so. I hate it on long rides because the Wee's can literally go 100 miles farther down the road than I am able to. I'm pretty sure if I do get a new bike it's going to be a matter of trading in my old trusty 2002 DL1000 on a much newer DL650. The money you will save on the 650, you can add cruise control and all kinds of farkles and walk away (and ride away) a happy rider, most definitely.
