'02 vs '08 DL1000

I found a very clean 1 owner '02 with 17,000 miles. Always garaged, fair weather mature rider. $3500.00. sounds lile a hot deal, is there any disadvantage in the '02?. My current ride is an '08KLR and it doesn't have quite enough hiway capabilities, a kick in the twisties and gravel roads, but so is the V-Strom, so I've heard. I'd rather not spend the 9 or 10 grand for the '08 but would if there were huge differences.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thanks greywolf, that answered a few more questions. Maybe I should pass on the '02 and look for an '06 or later.
