Good price, am I missing something?

Hi all,
I've been lurking for a bit and what a great resource this site is. It's nice to see a forum with such a great community, and not a bunch of people acting like children. Can't wait to join as an owner and not just a browser.

Anyways, I've been reading a lot and it seems like a v-strom 650 will be my next bike. I've had dirtbikes and a vintage CB but it's time for something more reliable and comfortable for my lady to ride with me, and something that can handle mixed surfaces. This seems to check all the boxes.

Came across an 04' on CL in NY city area for $2800. (Can't post link, post count too low) 12,000mi, Corbin seat, rear box, nearly new tires. It's a ways from me but seems like a really good deal. I know this was the first year of production, but were there any real changes in the following years (prior to 12') or any reasons to not get one from 04? Would love a newer one but the price on this one is very enticing and milage is relatively low. Any thoughts?

Be hard to turn down for that kinda money. And if you love it, and you will, you can always sell in the spring and probably at least break even and upgrade.

I have a 04 and there were only minor changes later. The biggest would be ABS. Minor were double spark plugs, may be a little more fuel-efficient. But I never feel as if I can't keep up with the newer ones.

Check Cycle Trader and/ or ebay competed auctions and see if that is really a good price for a 04. Unless you plan on putting a lot of miles on it you may be able to get a more farkled one with 30k miles and a lot newer for a similar price. Not sure if you could get an ABS model at such a price unless it has a lot of miles maybe.

Given the low mileage check that it has not been sitting somewhere unused for several years. Then I would be a little more worried about internal corrosion issues that typically would not occur. This time of year is good to buy in the NE. But no need to rush I think, there are plenty of offers, check the for sale section here as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be in the area of that bike in a few weeks, I may check it out when I am if it's still listed. I am not in a rush (need to sell my current bike first ideally) but it's good to know that they're relatively all the same pre 12' and that this is indeed a pretty fair deal. I'll be looking throughout the winter since I can haggle a bit more to strike a deal as no one in NE is buying bikes, it's sled season!

Thats normal around here price wise on an 04, condition is everything. With 12,000 miles, that bike sat around. When they sit a lot things dry out like fuel lines. If its clean and not all rusty and damaged, buy it. I've seen them with Happy Trails panniers for $3500 with much more miles. Stripped down they go for $2500 or so but, the miles are usually over 40K.

My used 06 DL1000 had spider webs all over the engine when I checked the valves, fuel injector rail hose was leaking bad, fork seals were dried out and brittle and it had around 26K on it. But, it had full OEM luggage, aftermarket exhaust, gel seat, new tires, new chain and sprockets, new brake pads, new battery and the PCIII. So, I thought $3700 for a 1000 wasn't bad considering it had a few farkles and the 3 hard bags that worked kinda decent. I rode it for a while like that with the "free" gel saddle, now it looks like a different bike. I have the farkle disorder.

Condition, condition, condition... See what it needs and make an offer. Is the chain stretched, tire age? Tire tread depth? Brake pads, coolant look decent? Probably needs a full service due to age, brake fluid etc. Always think about whether the bike is ready for a long trip, is it really road worthy? How much will it cost you to make it road worthy? Some used bikes are not worth it unless you turn your own wrenches. Then again, some bikes with 60K on them are well maintained and well equipped and great deals for the money. Bike shopping is interesting,,,, always...

Thanks for the thoughts sagebrush. Typically I do all my own wrenching but mostly on cars/trucks, not many bikes yet. I think you make a great point though about thoroughly understanding the condition. I think I will likely pay the ~$100 for a pre-purchase inspection when I find what I think is the right bike. We do them on trucks at my families shop all the time and have saved customers a lot of money/aggravation, I should take my own advice and have an independent party look at anything i want to buy. At this point in life I'm more interested in actually riding than tinkering and projects, so taking the time to find a well maintained bike is just as important as a good deal is.

Try to find one that is close enough to see yourself and talk to the owner. That will give you a better understanding about it's condition. If the bike has been out of the weather and been ridden regularly all be it not 1000 miles each ride it may not be bad. In fact it may have been pampered and nothing wrong with it. If it sat for extended period(s) I would be more worried.

Not sure if an independent inspection for a bike would be as useful as for a car or truck. I have no experience with that but would be worried about the degree of expertize of the inspector. Are there bike only inspectors that know what to look for?

A bit of a hike form Boston but this one would look attractive to me and he may be open to offers to include all the farkles at a reasonable price. He needs to sell it eventually it seems. Alternative
