Thinking about a new XT tonight

I just joined the forum and wanted to post right away. I am headed to the local dealership tonight to look at a 650XT with the extra luggage and such on it. I believe it is a 2015. I have been researching for a while now and I am I pretty positive that the V-strom is a better choice for me than the Honda NC700 and the Kawasaki Versys. I currently ride a 1987 Suzuki Intruder VS1400 so I know the power difference is likely going to be huge. But I am really looking for a reliable bike that I will use for 90% commuting with the occasional road trip. So far this 650 seems to fit the bill. I also have a newer car that I am trying to keep the miles off of. I typically put about 8000-10,000 miles on the bike every summer so I think it will suit me well economically.

That being said, anyone want to talk me out of it? I really haven't found many reasons against getting this bike. It seems to be proven at this point and that all you guys (and girls) love it. And the forum has been great in making my decision.

I am wondering, is it worth getting the upgraded package that include the luggage, engine guards, and windshield/screen? Or is aftermarket a better direction?

you are in the right zone

You do NOT want the NC700

Many riders like the Versys but we're biased here to the Wee

I went to the dealer today and got offered a really good deal on the 1000, so now I am thinking I might go that route. It will be $200 more than the adventure package for the 650 XT. Can you really go wrong with either one? The 650 or the 100? I am coming off of a 53 HP bike so I am sure I will be happy with either.

I LOVE my V2 (1000) I have never owned a Glee.
I did test ride one though. It was ok but the brakes suspension and power were far superior on the 1000.Plus the 1000 felt physically bigger and closer to my first gen 650.
For $200 more there would be no question for me.
I would buy the 1000 again. But , thats only my opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it lol.
BTW in the previous generation bikes I've owned 2 of each and preferred the 650...

If your old bike is 53hp and you are happy with it you will be even happier with the 650 as it makes more power and is much lighter.

The 1000 is damn near twice as much power.

The one advice I would give you though is that it's not just a $200 price difference. The adventure model comes with about everything you need, the base 1000 does not. You will spend about $1500 - $2000 to outfit it similar to the 650 is stock.

If you don't care about the luggage, etc then it's a no brainier, but in that case you should really be looking at a base 650 to compare to the 1000 for price point.

I bought the 1000, and love the bike! Very happy with my purchase and it's better then the 650 in almost every way. The 650 has the advantage at the gas pump getting better mileage and running on 87. It also has the advantage when it comes to paying for insurance.

I actually want luggage but I am looking at the Moose Racing luggage along with some others, and personally I think I like the aftermarket stuff better. That being said, the only bikes I am going to get the $2200 cash back from Suzuki on are the 2014s, and they only have the DL1000 left for those.

What do you guys think about the traction control and hydraulic clutch on the 2014 1000 vs. lack of traction control and cable clutch on the 650?

The dealer was really nice. No pressure. He did say that he personally owned a 1000 and felt that it was better on the expressway for him. He said the 650 would be great but it sort of hits its sweet spot around 70-75 MPH.

In terms of reliability, it seems like both bikes are pretty reliable and have a proven engine in them.

I could have gotten a 2014 DL1000 for about $1000 more than my 2015 DL650. I like the DL1000, but not $1,000 more. However, for $200 more, I would have probably gone that route.

That being said, I don't regret my purchase of the DL650 at all... ever. It is the perfect bike for me. Great ergos, great commuter, great on the hwy and backroads equally, great 2-up, great on gravel/dirt.

Although I like the looks of the Vee2 more, my Wee2 has my heart.
