Buying a used V-strom -- new rider

I am new to riding and I have just finished the MSF class and got my licence. I'm super excited to possibly get a V-strom as my first bike. Since I am new, though, I don't know what to look for or which questions to ask when buying a used motorcycle. I have found an ad on Craigslist for a 2006 DL650 and I plan to meet up with the owner and test ride it. Here's the ad:

"Bike is in very good shape with 35000 well maintained miles on the clock. I have all the maintenance records on hand that you can go through. The valve adjustment was done about 3k ago and at this point in the maintenance schedule i believe its good for 27k more before next check up. currently using Rotella T synthetic oil since about 20,0000 miles. Pilot road 4 rear tire just installed. The storage container on the back is lockable and water proof. I do have crash bars that come with the bike, I believe its missing hardware to mount up so i never put them on. I regularly get 55mpg and i have a taller windscreen i can throw into the deal. Im selling to work up a down payment on a Golf TDI. I drive from Paso Robles to Morro Bay daily. If you have any questions just call or text. No Test drives with out full amount of cash on hand. you crash it or drop it you buy it policy."

What do you guys think about this ad? Does the seller sound legit? What questions should I prepared to ask him and what parts of the bike should I check? I'm not family with bikes yet so I don't know what's normal or not.

He is asking $3800. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks a bunch!

$3800 would be a decent deal around here. V-Stroms are hard to find in the used market for less than $5000. However, it wouldn't hurt to haggle a bit on the price. Cash talks.

Sounds like got a lot of extras which is nice. Sounds like a fair price. Not sure if you are a tall rider, but if you are having a tall windshield is a must. Also might want to look for the thread about if a 650 is a starter bike for a new rider.

The thread has lots of good information from both new riders and seasoned riders, just good idea to make sure you are getting the right bike. The 650 was my first bike and have been riding for a little over a year now and I really like it. Good luck whatever way you decide to go.
