Am I crazy?

Should I sell my ST1300 to get a Wee? I came from a smaller bike, an FZ6, to my current bike, the ST1300. I've had the bike six months and I still haven't gotten used to the weight of the bike. I mainly use my bike to commute to work. The ride is only ten or twelve miles one way. About 15 minutes of that time I spend sitting in traffic. I have yet to take a long trip on the ST. The only reason I hesitate to sell it is that I have all setup already. I have heated grips, gps, custom seat, etc. I think I want a smaller bike but I'm not sure I want to do all the work again, even though I will probably enjoy doing it. I guess my main questions are: With the right seat, will the Wee be as comfortable? How comfortable is it for two up? How reliable is it? i.e. What are the known problems? What are the annoying things about this bike? All bikes have their quirks. What are the Wee's? I know the Wee will get better gas mileage but it also has a smaller tank so I guess it kind of equals out with more frequent fill ups. How many miles will I get out of a tank with mostly city riding? I know it's a lot of questions but I already have my bike for sale and I'm starting to get offers, so it's getting serious now. Please offer any input you can. Thanks!

Hi MM.
It kinda does sound like you've got a bit more bike than you really need..
The DL650 is a wonderfully reliable bike but you'll find it does not offer the same high speed stability, wind protection or comfort in it's stock form and probably won't when upgraded. It's a different kind of design..more of a "do it all" kind of bike whereas your ST is made for the highway. For a daily commute the DL is perfect in my opinion, agile and tall for a good view in traffic. You should find that 250 miles on a tank is easy to do and many get closer to the 300 mark although city driving may make that number a bit optimistic. There will be a bit more maintenence associated with the chain but it's an easy bike to work on.
Two up is said to be no problem. All in all it's a fine bike and a tremendous bargain...we like to think you can't go wrong with one...hope this helps...J.R.

Why not go to a Vee instead of a Wee? Still lighter than your ST and better for two up with a more comfy seat....I looked at a new ST1300 before I bought my Vee also but decided against it because of just what your talking about.You should try them both out if possible and than decide if its even worth it to you to trade...I went from an 08 650 KLR to my Vee because I wanted better two up and long distance riding...took me a few rides but now I realize I did the right thing...this Vee is a hoot

I have a ’06 Vee I bought new after taking a cross country trip on a ’82 Gold Wing. I thought about buying the Vee before the trip and within a week upon my return I bought it. I researched the Vee myself and the biggest complaint I found was the wind buffeting. I’m 5’10 and the wind would hit me right at eye level. I bought a large aftermarket windshield and it stopped the head buffeting but then it became apparent how much wind comes up from the sides of the gas tank and pushes up on my chest. In the cold and with a jacket, it’s very aggravating. The only problems I’ve had with the bike so far are a couple of times it just quit running, but started back up with no problem. Also the coolant clamps were loose, leaked fluid and I fixed it with a wrench. Recently I was riding down an off ramp and the bike backfired through the intake/air cleaner and started missing. I found the air filter to be due for a changing and an intake rubber boot had popped off the intake. I replaced the filter and refitted the boot and no more problems. Take note that this bike requires periodic valve adjustments and I’m told they are expensive just to check and determine if an adjustment is necessary. I use the factory seat without complaint. I ride two up more than I’d like and my girlfriend doesn’t complain unless I take the trunk off. Good luck deciding.

Ive been thinking of trading up from the wee lately and I've demoed a ton of bikes, but like you most of my miles come from commuting with small trips on saturdays and the occasional long one. The first bike type I thought I wanted was actually an FJR or ST but after realizing how hard they would be to get out of the garage to run for groceries or to work I recosidered. I now have it narrowed down to 2 bikes a bandit 1250s or a Triumph Sprint st both have more snot than the wee and would'nt be too much to pull out anytime. I'm not trying to talk you out of the wee, it is an awsome bike, comfortable w/ a bulletproof engine but keep your options open find a good dealer who lets you ride first.

I have a GL1800 and a Wee and love both of them. Pretty hard to beat the Wing for long distance touring, and I use it to pull a camper trailer.

The Wee is my fun! bike. I love that bike and would not hesitate taking it on very long distances. It's got plenty of power and is satisfying to ride.

Now, as to the ST1300, I had an '03 ST and that is probably my favorite of all motorcycles I've had. The weight was an issue for me, only when moving it around in the garage. Otherwise, it's like it has no weight as soon as it starts moving. You said you haven't taken it on any trips yet. Don't get rid of it before you do some long distance, as the ST rivals the Gold Wing in terms of comfort for long distance riding, and it handles better. It's a real mile eater. As for in-town, traffic riding, I found the ST to be just fine, and I never felt it to be too heavy or porky for handling traffic. It's quick and agile and did just fine for me. But then, I'm 6'2" and (at the time) 230 pounds, so I could handle the weight just fine. I guess what I'm saying is, don't get rid of the ST prematurely. It's another great all-around motorcycle.

If I were you, I would hold off on selling the ST 1300 for now. Do yourself a favor... find a DL650 or a DL1000 and take it for a test ride. If you can, test ride both, maybe even back to back.

Why? Simple... you may already have what you really want, or you may realize that one of the DL's is your dream bike. But you can't figure that out from a bunch of internet posts, you have to ride them all to figure that out for yourself. I've never ridden an ST, but a good friend of mine has one. He went from a VTX 1800 to an ST 1300 and loves it. I still have my VTX 1300 and I now have a DL650 as well. I considered selling the VTX but it's just a completely different bike, built for a completely different purpose.

What I think you may find is that the ST really will be better for longer rides, especially at highway speeds, loaded with a passenger and luggage. My guess is that it will have better stability and just an overall better feel in that situation. However, when you ride a Vee or a Wee, you will have a smile on your face from ear to ear. These bikes really carve corners and perform rather well on dirt roads as well. I wouldn't take an ST where I'm now totally willing to take my Wee.

I'm keeping the VTX for two-up riding, the Wee is my commuter and fun bike. If you can afford to insure two bikes, consider that as a possible option. If not, at least ride the DL's before you sell your beloved ST. Seriously.
