Tucson rider interested in the V-Strom

I'm 41 and have ridden motorcycles most of my life. I currently have an '05 KTM 300 EXC and an '01 KLR 650. I love offroad riding. The gnarlier the trail, the more I like it. The KTM is for pure offroad and I use the KLR for dual sporting (75% dirt). I've had both of these bikes for about a decade.

The KLR is a do anything bike, but it doesn't really do anything well. It's 80's technology and I can feel it when I ride. I plan on keeping it because I can take it just about anywhere and it has a longer range than my KTM. I've surprised myself on some of the stuff I've ridden with it. My wife will ride it with me, but her butt starts hurting after a few hours, even with a Corbin seat.

I want a bike where we can take longer trips and be comfortable. Of course, with a V-Strom 1000, our dirt experience will be severely limited. That's okay, as I have other bikes to satisfy that itch. I want something we can cruise comfortably on the highway at 75 and then take for short jaunts on well maintained forest roads. Maybe even pack some clothes for a weekend trip staying in hotels. Doing my research, the V-Strom 1000 looks like just the bike.

My budget is about $4-5k and I'll be buying in the spring. I'm refreshing my KTM and KLR one at a time this winter. Between riding and wrenching, I'll be plenty entertained plus it gives me more time to save for the V. While I've been considering one for the past couple of years, I haven't ridden one. I hope it lives up to my expectation.
