Wee Mod Questions

Okay, so I'm about to dump the M50 and get a wee, but I have some questions about mods.

Windshields: From what I gather, getting the adjustable bracket (Madstad?) is purchase #1. I'm looking for pretty decent weather protection, so I was thinking about a windstrom. Has anyone 5'11" with a 32" inseam compared the windstrom with the givi screen? I'm curious which gives better coverage. Also, does the laminar lip really do anything?

Bash Guards: I like the one with the skid plate/crash bar combo (pat walsh designs?). Anyway, Is there a way to get frame sliders and one of these crash guards? I've never dropped a bike, but since I hear the wee is "top heavy" I'm more nervous about it and want to protect against damage from the dreaded driveway tipover.

Hand Guards: I understand the OEM guards are only weather protection, and the Acerbis are a PITA to install. Is there something out there that a guy with mechanical skill at 1 or 2 on a scale of 10 can install that also offers protection to the levers?

Center Stand: I'm thinking OEM with dealer install, assuming I can negotiate this. I've seen no issues with the OEM stand on the site, but one of the vendor sites said it was cheap. Anyone have problems with it?

Bags: I don't like the look of the OEM bags. I'm thinking of Givi's. I don't really want a top-case, but it would be nice to fit my riding gear in the bags so I can remove the helmet/boots and the stich to go for a walk or a hike and have it locked up on the bike. Based on that volume need, am I looking at the 41s? I really like the look of the AL boxes and the carabou bags, but I'm thinking that flat face to the wind would be bad on mileage and create a hard-edge for the rare occasion that I ride 2-up. Any suggestions here?

Other mods: I saw something about a steering stabilizer. What does this do, and why would someone put it on their bike? Also, how bad is the spray if there is no extenda-fenda? Seat: This is quite personal I know, but does anyone think their stock seat is fine for all day rides?

Use: Every year I will take 1 week and go off on a trip by myself. This year I'm thinking about the black hills in SD (but not in August) or to Glacier Nat'l Park. These trips usually take me 2 days to go about 800-1200 miles from home, and then I ride around for 3-4 days seeing the sights, and ride home for 2 days. Aside from that, its mostly 5-10 mile trips around town, commuting to work, getting odds and ends etc.

Any advice or suggestions people have would be appreciated.

That's a lot of questions.

WIndshield, before you spend the $90 on a madstad try it out in all positions stock first. Many folks (like me) find they have no need of anything else.

I have the Pat Walsh engine guard, bash plate combo on my Vee and find it to be quite adequate. I have a tight budget so the price was the deciding point. I addition he is local so I could just go pick it up. I don't think fitting sliders as well would be an issue with it, no problem.

I like the stock hand guards for blocking the wind when it's cold out, I don't do a lot of trail riding so the protection aspect is not an issue. However the one time I did tip over the hand guard took a good portion of the force and just got scratched, no worries about levers.

If you can get the centerstand thrown in then I'd do it. If not then I'd still buy it and put it on yourself, it's not hard. I have the Hepco-Becker model, only because nobody had anything bad to say about it. I'm happy with it.

I have some Givi-clone saddlebags, they're huge, I think I can fit a Buick in there. I don't usually ride with them on, I like the top case for just putting stuff in and carrying items back & forth to work. I haven't rode with the saddlebags much, but I had a high speed weave thing going on the last ride I took which I'm tentatively blaming on them. Keeping the speeds to a more legal rate took care of it.

IMO steering stabilizer is a way to get some more cash out of me, sure it may have helped my weave but so did slowing down. The benefit of my way is I actually saved money by slowing instead of paying $$ for a new part. Have no opinion on Fenda Extender, I have also found no need for it on my Vee.

I like my Suzuki gel seat, it's a little wider so I'm on tip toes at a stop. But I spend most of my riding time going instead of stopping so it's not an issue. I have dealt with the heat-retaining properties of the gel a little, considering augmenting the seat with a sheepskin pad.

From your stated usage expectations it looks like you're considering a great bike. Don't get too wrapped up in mods until you get the bike and see what your actual needs are. Sometimes I get anxious feeling like I need a particular item just because the collective says it's better. The cure for me is to go for a ride and realize the bike is fine for me the way it is. Not to mention I prefer the money to be in my pocket if possible.

A steering damper is tiny version of a shock absorber that is fitted between the frame of a bike and the steering. It's job is to prevent headshake or tank slappers, a violent back and forth action of the steering. Race replicas need them because their steering geometry is so extreme.

Many damper makers do not make a damper specifically for the V-Strom. The reason is that if left in it's original configuration it probably doesn't need one. If the geometry of a bike is mild enough, headshake is very rare. I expect the V-Strom falls into this catagory. Now if a person is going to start messing with the V-Strom forks and suspension, maybe they might need one.

Heres my take

I have an '07 Wee,
Windshield is Givi and I do have the Madstad. Great!!!!!!!

Skid Plate - Don't need one

Luggage - Nelson Rigg soft luggage with duffel that clips to the saddle bags. Great again!! No leaks and very flexible for packing readjusting and taking into your room/tent at night.

Seat - stock. SUCKS!!!!!! I have to get off after about an hour. I am looking into a Sargeant.

Hand Guards are stock - They work great for me

Center Stand is stock and works great. I consider this a must have for this bike

Steering Damper - don't have one and have not seen a reason for one yet. If I was doing alot of heavy off road I could see it. It is also possible that since I have never had one I don't know what I am missing.

Fork springs minimum. Full suspension upgrade if $ is no problem.
Alaska Leather butt pad minimum. Sargent seat if you've got the $.
Everything else is gravy.

I thought the same way until a tank slapper caused by high speed with a full luggage load spit me off. I won't be doing that again but still feel better just seeing the Scotts stabilizer sitting in front of me. I don't worry about pot holes doing my steering for me any more either. I consider it a must for any bike I own, not gravy. Once slapped, forever shy.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

It looks like most of your questions have been answered. I would like to say the stock seat is great for me. I've done several 500+ mile days and never had any real discomfort. Of course, I had been tooling around on an SV before I got the Weestrom, so my rear end thought I was on a LazyBoy when I sat on the Strom. The stock windshield is fine for me also. Windshields and seats are personal preference.

Centerstand is almost a must. I don't have one and could kick my own A$$ everytime I clean and lube the chain. It would also be nice to have the stand just while farkling the bike. I use bolts in the spool holes and a pair of jackstands to hold the bike straight while I'm working on it just b/c I can't stand working on a bike on the sidestand. I will have a centerstand soon.

Handguards and heated grips are awesome.

Ride your bike for a while and you'll know what you need/don't need very soon. Give the seat a good test before going aftermarket and try the windshield up/down/with rubber washers/etc before going with a Givi/Madstad or just the Madstad.

All in all, I can't imagine another bike that I would trade my Weestrom for at the moment.

Was your tank slapper on a V-Strom?

Can't blame a rider for putting a damper on any bike that gave them a wobble, let alone one that threw them off.

I had a bike I was afraid to ride without a damper. It was a stupid fast bike with a super short wheelbase. I couldn't believe they even sold it without a damper. I got the damper installed and I felt it working hard to keep the bike stable more than once.

If I were ever slapped I'd enjoy seeing a damper on every ride too, regardless of what bike did the slapping.

It was on a DL650K5. Full three piece luggage, a tall windscreen and an indicated 119mph may not play well together.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

OMG! Your wobble threw you down starting at that speed? Lots of riders would give up riding and attach themselves to a sofa for the rest of their days after that.

I hope this doesn't sound morbid but I'm sure I'd learn something from reading anything you wrote about it. Did you write about what happened? Mind going public with a link if you did? I totally understand if you don't want to do that. Wow. You must have had some luck going your way that day, you are still with us and riding.
