Current Intruder 1400 owner thinking of a Wee

Greetings, new guy here.

I currently have a 2000 VS1400 Intruder and I am thinking about upgrading to a V-Strom 650. I have been riding since I was 17, I am 47 now so that makes it 30 years (time flies, they are pesky.)

I like my trudy, it has big torque engine and is fun to ride a couple hundred miles around the rural Texas highways. It seems wanderlust has is grabbing a hold of me after some medical stuff over the last 10 years or so, and my 1400 just doesn't have the ergonomics for being a long distance bike.

So I test rode a Wee at the dealer next town over, for some reason they just let me hop on a brand new bike, said "don't go to lunch, have fun" and handed me the key. I did some low speed parking lot maneuvers; circles, figure eights, stops, etc. learning the clutch and breaks, and off I went. I went through some residential neighborhoods and a 50 mph highway. My Intruder does not like slow speeds, it flops the front a lot, but the 650 seems to love going slow, handling was a dream. It doesn't have the grunt but at a stoplight I was out of the hole before any cars, and at 70 it didn't seem too revved up, but I would probably change the front sprocket if going on long slabs.

The ergos were so much different but it didn't take long to get used to it. Having my feet under me actually was the oddest part, but being able to push my butt off the seat was refreshing. My 1400 doesn't have forward controls, just the stock setup, but I have to pull on the bars to stand up so this was much different.

All in all, the test ride has only solidified my desire to upgrade. The dealer really wanted to sell me the bike, offered me $1200 on my Intruder, and offered low payments, upgrades, etc. I had to break it to him I was only looking and really wanted a used one instead of new, but if he got any in trade to give me a call.

Been reading here a little since the test ride, y'all seem like a good group of people. I cannot see any reason to not find a good used wee and farkel it to my size and riding style and go have an adventure.

Good to meet you,
99

You want more grunt than your 1400 and still have basically the same bike you tried, try a 2013 or earlier 1000 (Vee).

I traded my LC1500 in on one and never looked back....well except for the red and blue lights

More grunt than the 1400? Okay, you piqued my interest, maybe I should start looking in that direction.

I'm getting to be an old fart so being quick and having a high top end isn't important. I did run my intruder against my buddy's Harley Wide Glide and pulled in front of him, but it was close. Of course it was a race between two slow bikes, mine just wasn't as slow. The 650 I test rode was fine for me, and more agile than I realized was possible, taught me what I was missing.

My budget dictates the 650 over the 1K, and I believe it will do what I want with no problem.

Cheers,

I've owned the 1K for nearly 3 years. After borrowing a 650 for a few days, I've decided that I will trade my bike in for a 650 when I get the chance. I weigh 250lbs.

Glad to hear this.... I just sold my Tenere and will decide on my next bike once the 2015 bikes are announced... a leftover Glee is the top of my list right now....

Strike that -- former Intruder owner

Well I am bike-less now, had a debt come due and worked a trade for my 1400 for $2K of the debt. I was happy to get out from under most of what I owed, but bummed that I have no ride except a cage at the moment.

My wife does not ride, went with me once and didn't like it at all, but she understands my want/need to ride and was reluctant to let me use my bike to pay off debt. She did ask me to wait until we get out of our current difficulties (one to one and a half more years of college for the final kid) before I get another one. I showed her photos of the Wee and told her this is what I am getting when time comes - used of course, I don't like paying the depreciation.

Anyway, until such a time I will bow out and read and learn what I can. I'm thinking Christmas 2015 will have Santa lugging a Wee Strom to my house.

Cheers,
99

Well, the guy I sold my 1400 to is now working in west Texas oil fields and is storing the bike at my house and says I can ride it anytime. So I"m back in the saddle for short rides at least.

Therapy rides here I come.

Still looking for a wee? I sold my intruder 800 - that I loved - for a wee earlier this year and have not regretted it at all. The wee has plenty of power and is super smooth. I do miss the rumble and roar of the intruder from time to time, but no regrets at all. Let me know what you decide.

So, nearly 5 years later and I picked up a 2014 V-Strom 650 ABS Adventure. Came with original boxes, engine guard, plus a host of features I planned on putting on whatever I bought. Those include a skid plate, highway bars, bar riser, mirror extenders, fork brace, top box with auxiliary break light, 12V and 5V power ports, and probably other things I am forgetting. Seems the previous owner really had her decked out, maybe a member here.

I am planning on getting a peg lowering and control relocator kit then working on my camping kit and get out and explore this country.

Let me see if I can get a photo to attach. I'm the bald one.

Just as a thought, I've seen a few 2018 1000XTs out there, almost comparable to 650s in price. Especially 2019 650s.

The 2018s have all the improvements from 2014 and 2017 updates, and I watched for recent price drops and pulled the trigger two weeks ago.

I'm 56, and although I certainly ain't 20 anymore, the 1K is solid without being "overweight" to me.

I prefer the upright position and at 6'3 180lbs the taller bikes suit me fine.

All this said, as you well know, get which one is best for you and your riding habits!

Both are great bikes.
