Might buy an 05 Wee

I'm considering buying an 05 Wee with 29,000 miles for $2500 plus shipping costs. It has engine guard, skidplate and a Kappa topcase for farkles. Because of the distance involved I would have to buy sight unseen. The seller seems like a good guy so that is not a huge concern but with any bike purchase it is nice to be able to ride first. After $450 shipping it is still a good deal I think. I'm not 100% convinced that I want to go to a standard from a cruiser so buying a lower cost used will allow me to fully test the bike rather than committing to a new bike. If i don't like it I'm hoping I'd be able to sell it for what I had into it. I have ridden a friends Wee for an hour and liked it.

I think you will like it! I bought mine a couple months ago and love it. I'm in the Chicago area so perhaps we shall meet up one day.

Oh and yes - I think you would get your money back for it when you sell it. They are hard to find around here!

Here are a couple of videos the seller made. The first is of it running.

I was in the same position you are a month ago. Coming off a cruiser, I bought an 04 Wee. After a couple of rides I got very comfortable with it and especially like the way it handles compared to my v-star. Cornering, especially slow tight turns is so much easier. I'm very happy with the change. I too took the cheap route to see how much I would like the vstrom. And I am really enjoying it - hope you do too.
By the way, the deal you mentioned (including the shipping) is what I paid.

From what you can tell it sounds like most of them. They have a fair amount of mechanical noise in general. I don't think the miles are any big deal unless it was abused. My friend's '05 has about 60k. I am suspicious his is getting a bit tired as its down about 15 mph in top speed over my '11 but he has done a poor job of maintaining it.
Otherwise the bike you're looking at appears pretty clean, the price seems fair. I don't think its a particular steal when you have to throw in the shipping but it seems fair for my area.
If I were thinking of it as you are, kind of dipping a toe in the water so to speak, I'd probably do it the same way you are.

A dealer closer to home (300 miles) has come back with a lower price on an 07 with 10,000 miles. It would still cost $1000 more than the 05 and not come with luggage. I'm still inclined to go with the 05.

The two things the '07 has going for it is that it will be easier to resell if you decide you want to since it is somewhat newer and has lower miles.
Around here, perhaps due to the relatively short good riding season, people get resistive about buying bikes with much over 15-20k, in part because there is typically no shortage of low mile units.
If the '07 is an abs model that would weigh in its favor as well (not sure when they started that).

It is not an ABS unit. It does have brand new tires. I'd be able to ride it before buying too. You bring up a good point about resale. Total price would end up being $1350 more.

The resale would be my only reservation. If you knew you were going to ride it til hell froze over I wouldn't worry about the mileage.
If you end up riding it a couple thousand miles and dont like the bike it could be much easier to sell the low mileage unit.
Naturally either has to be a fair price to start with.

I would have $3000 into the 05 and $4200 into the 07.
