Looking to buy a Vee, anything I should watch out for?

I've suddenly got the urge to buy a VStrom. I was seriously looking at the DL650's, but my wife doesn't think I'll be happy with it and should go for the DL1000.

Or maybe she's just trying to say I need to compensate for something?

At any rate, when I go looking at these bikes is there anything I should specifically look for or be weary of? For example the Vee I looked at tonight ran just fine, very torquie and I really liked it! However, when I brought it back, I put the bike into neutral and let the clutch out. When I did that it sounded like something was loose in the engine, I pulled the clutch back in and the sound stopped. Is this "normal" or is it an indication that there may be work needed?

The Vee I'm planning on looking at in the next couple of days has 50k+ miles on it. Would that make you nervous in purchasing the bike?

Thanks for all the help and any input. I'm excited about getting a Vee, just want to make sure I don't buy one that would make be regret my decision.

Many V1000's have gone over 200,000 miles with proper maintenance...

Only thing I would watch for is 650 guys trying to talk you out of it... I had 2 1000's and loved them both.. No problems with either one. Can ride 90 MPH all day long 2 up with luggage easy at lower RPM.... Not something the 650 guys can say... 2 pipes, 35 more lbs for 35 more HORSEPOWER. Just a more elegant MC overall... Then again I am biased..

Riding since 1973

Don't let the clutch noise deter you from your purchase. That is common for higher mileage Suzuki vtwins. It won't leave you stranded. If you simply can't live with the noise, contact Realshelby and get the basket rebuilt to better than new.

Thanks for the responses. I quickly found by reading the forum that the noise I heard was indeed "normal" although not anything that I'm used to from any of my previous rides. Still looking and feel more confident about buying knowing that there's a great support group here to help out if there's any trouble.
