York PA trip 2018

I live in MA, and my dad lives near Pittsburgh PA. We are meeting up in York PA September 20th, to attend the HD open house. I live right near the tri state area of VT, NH, and MA. Does anyone know of a good route to get down that way without hitting up all of the cities between here and there? When I drive down that way, I go 91 to 84, but I kinda want to avoid interstates and head through scenic routes. Thanks all!

Skip the HD open house meet your dad in Berkley Springs WV and ride 1000's of miles of amazing roads.

I live 45 miles from York have worked at the HD Factory and avoid it like the plague especially during open house.

This is something he has been wanting to do all of his life. He has rode HDís his entire life. My job moved me to MA, so I rarely get to ride with him, so this is something I wanted to do for him. I agree, I would rather ride the back country roads. Especially in VT! Their ADV routes are amazing! Iím sure WV is the same.

We will be spending two days together, so Iím pretty excited, just not sure the best way to get down there. Iím sure eastern PA has some cool routes through it.

Looking at a map, I can hope onto rt 209 up here in NY. I know of some scenic routes to at least get to that road. Has anyone traveled 209 before? I can get off just north of Harrisburg and work my way down from there. Whatís that road like? Do the small towns along the route slow you down?

Where in NH, VT, MA are you talking about? York, PA is a long ride any way you go...longer if you avoid the highways! 209 through the Delaware Water Gap is a beautiful road to Stroudsburg, PA off of 84 West.....from there, it is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to York via 33 South, then 22 West to 222 West....not bad roads but you will lose some time in the small towns. Still, nice ride! Just drove this route coming back to VA from NH (North Conway) and it is not too bad...if you are starting closer to Brattleboro, VT then head West on 9 and grab 22 South....good road, not 91! Takes you to 84 in Danbury CT so avoids all the Hartford nightmare and the stupid mountain pass to Danbury, lol
Good luck with a route and ignore all the BS...the time with your dad is way too important to miss!

Thanks k9!

I’ll mark this path for sure. Looks simple enough. I have a whole day set aside for travel, so the time doesn’t really bother me. Just wanted to make the most out of this trip without taking interstates. I’ve never gone down 22 in NY. Looks fun!

Depends how you come west out of Mass. A nice route I have taken through NY is NY 29 to NY 30. Take 30 down to Hancock NY. Then you could take PA191 down to US 6 and if you are in a hurry run down I81 to York. If not run US 6 West to PA 87 down to Williamsport PA. Then down US 15 to Harrisburg and I 83 to York. So many great back roads in PA itís hard to choose. Enjoy the ride!

Good suggested route. I would take 15 at least as far south as Harrisburg, I-81 anywhere within 20 miles of Harrisburg is a nightmare of stunt traffic and usually road construction. Unfortunately, it's hard to avoid taking I-83 to York. Since you're going on a weekday; the commuter traffic early morning and from 4:00 pm, on, entering or leaving Harrisburg is real bad. On I-81 or I-83. Tens of thousands of state workers entering or leaving the Capitol.

The State workers are staged in 5 minute increments to allow a steady flow instead of a flood of people coming or going to work. Yes the busy time are 6:45am to 9:00am and 4:00 to 6:00pm. I work in Harrisburg and live in Chambersburg. I travel the South Bridge 581, I-83 and I-81 every day twice a day. Unless there is an accident even the worst congestion will only hold you up 10 to 15 minutes at most. Normally its 5 to 10 minutes. Traffic around here is nothing like Washington D.C., NY City or Boston where you sit for hours for no reason.

That's got to be a big help. I last worked there in 2003. Then and before, most people got off at 4:00, some at 4:30. I was coming from or heading to the East on I-81 and I-78. Truck city! It's been some years, but the worst I have even seen is the Boston area, followed by Toronto.
