Long Island, NY to Western Indiana

I'm thinking about taking a ride this Summer to visit a friend who moved out to Indiana.
I think I would head across northern Pennsylvania along route 6 and then along Lake Erie for a bit before heading southwest towards Indy along back roads following I-71 and I-70.
It looks about 950 miles and I thought I'd take 3 days each way so we don't have to rush so much.

Any suggestions, anyone? I've never been out that way so I'm wondering what I should be sure to see, (or stay away from?).

What to stay away from???

For one thing, the cops in Ohio. My brother got a speeding ticket on his Kawi ZZR 1200 for 61 in a 55--I kid you not--cost him like $85. They really enjoy pulling 2 wheelers over for some reason.

I'm not sure about the roads in northern Ohio, but southeast Ohio are some of the best in the Midwest--goes for southern Indiana too. South of Nashville, IN are my favorite roads to travel. Northern Indiana is pretty flat and boring. If you have time, head south--the roads are twisty and in great shape.

Thanks.
I'll look at the map and see about dropping south into Ohio and Indiana.

You will love Route 6 in PA. Lots of interesting places to see/visit. Goes thru old quaint towns. Great eating to be found. Wyalusing Rocks has a great overlook of the Susquehanna River. Road is in good shape last time I was through. Lots of broad gentle curves, occasional straights but nothing lengthy. Hope you have time to experience it and not just drive through.

Talking The middle way

Yeah, you could stay on #6 right into Ohio then drop south and take 30 across central Ohio to Indy. this route might add some time to your trip though. I live just north of #6 across the line in NY so drop me a line if ya feel like it. There is for sure some great riding in central Ohio.

Unless you are trying to make time once you get into IN, skip I-70. It is as straight as it gets all the way across the state.

Now, if you cross into Indiana from Ohio on the State Highways, I can map you out some stuff that will be nice all the way to Indy. However, it will probably add about 200 miles to your trip.

Sample of Ohio

I enjoyed Ohio State Highway 39. It goes through Amish country, and the towns and buildings are sometimes quaint. Watch out for horses on the road, mainly pulling carriages which may be poorly lit.

If you are interested in roundabouts, visit Carmel IN, a dormitory for Indianapolis. They have lotsandlots of roundabouts there, and approve of them in a big way. The mayor suspects the change from stoplights to roundabouts has helped him get re-elected, always the most important feature of any decision in the world of politics.

Enjoy your ride. Actually, you have no choice in that matter any more.

Tige,
I would skip I-70.
I need to get to around Terre Haute, so I could go south of Indy, I guess.

I know some people in Canton that we used to jet ski with, so I would like to head toward Canton once I get into Ohio, and then south from there.

Besides that, I'd like to avoid the big cities.

I'm off in the Summer, so I hope I won't be pressed for time. It depends on if my son comes with me, and what his schedule is.

I've been reading about your trip to AK last summer, sounds awesome!

Keith,
Where do you get on 39?

Thanks for all your help.

Canton Ohio to Terre Haute Indiana area....Have you ever been to the motorcycle accessory store the Iron Pony in Columbus Ohio. If not I would stop there. Besides that your straight line between Canton or Columbus to Terre Haute is going to be pretty boring. Depending on your travel day maybe we will escort you part way
