I have searched and found very little on the subject, so apologies if this has been beat to death previously...

I am ready to buy a GPS, and have decided on the Zumo over the TomTom based on what I have read here. I am interested in the Zumo 450 vs the 550, mainly because I have no need for bluetooth or XM capabilities, and it's a few hundred dollars less.

I have compared specs, and can only see one potentially meaningful difference - that the 450 is not WAAS enabled (but is this a real necessity on the street?).

I would appreciate opinions from those who have the 450, or decided against it for one reason or another.

I'm thinking of the 450 too and I haven't been able to find much info either. I think I'll just hang out and see what response you get.

I was torn between the Garmin Zumo450 and the Garmin 276C and decided to go with the 276C

waas will give you quicker aqusition & better accuracy, not a big deal imho

both have the sirc iii chipset

276c has the best screen on the market in bright sun, higher resolution than the zumo #1 reason for my decision

zumo $550± / 276C $400 for reconditioned unit

zumo comes loaded with street & city navigator for NA + for zumo
zumo takes industry standard SD ram cards another + for zumo

276c comes loaded with only basic NA base map, no room for adding maps without adding memory, memory is propretary garmin RoHS ram cards

276C is marine unit, with necessary ram cards it cost as much as Zumo

No text to speech on the 450. That already ends it for me. Text to speech is nice in car or on bike.

I bought the 550... well, I tried to. I bought the 550 from ABE's of Maine. Was shipped a 550 box and 450 inside..long story short, I had to buy a 550 locally and am still waiting for a credit on the original 550/450. As for the difference, I couldn't see anything other than the bluetooth.

Let me regrees.... I bought a "550" and got a 450... opened the package, turned it on, ...all seemed fine... was able to do everything I wanted, EXCEPT, it would not connect to my BLackberry. Thats when I realized that I was shipped a 450 and not a 550.

In other words, they are identical in every sense of the word except for the bluetooth.. if you don't need or want bluetooth, go with the 450.

Now, the reason I wanted the 550 is for that exact reason, I wanted my Blackberry to speak to my 550 via bluetooth and then the 550 to speak to my Scala Rider bluetooth headset/intercom also via bluetooth.

BB->550->Scala-intercom to passenger/music/phonecalls/mp3

In my opinion, the bluetooth makes the 550 well worth the extra $

the Zumo is a better buy, unless highest resolution screen is your priority, Zumo has a decent screen

I also considered Delorme software & reciever for a PDA/handheld computer,
I've been using Delorme software and receiver connected to my laptop for a number of years now. Sweet setup but not portable enough for the bike.

I'm in the process of deciding whether or not to retire my 276C and go with the 550...

If I stay with the 276C, I need to add another 512 MB card for my upcoming trips. That's $200 in round numbers. I already have a Pioneer XM/MP3 combo player that I just bought to the tune of $400 with the car kit. Problem is, that I may wanna go Bluetooth. Starcom is about to release a new Bluetooth modual to do away with the helmet headset coil cables... Ugh, there's another 150 - 200 bucks. Not to mention all of the cables I have to hardwire and wire into the Starcom...

I really like the features in the 550 and the all-in-one package it offers, but that's a problem, too. If the MP3 goes fluey, the whole unit is off for repair, versus just a component of a whole system. Plus, I'll need to get that $200 XM antenna for the 550.

Best prices I've found for the 550 is $672 and 180 for the antenna. $852, v. $400 to upgrade the 276C. :???: I can close the gap if I sell the 276C, but that's a crap shoot and wouldn't make sense to sell it for less than $200. I figger the XM radio/MP3 player I now have will get tossed into the pile of MP3 players and XM radios that it replaced (now, there's a pile of wasted dough!)

Now, to make matters worse, I hafta equip two bikes to accept the 550!

Feck it! Boating was cheaper...

Zumo 450

I purchased the Zumo 450 over the Tom Tom just recently.
Two reasons.
1) The Zumo states it's waterproof. The Tom Tom is water resistant. Yes, I've read the "testing" Tom Tom has posted.
2) It's was easier for me to manipulate/use when riding with gloves. I liked the buttons on the left side.

There are other +/- issues you can factor in; bluetooth vs cable, a shade to improve visibility, screen glare, etc.

I'm sure either is good choice. There's a review comparing both of these on the newsstand in one of the bike rags just this month.

I paid $496 delivered.
