ahhh.

so I had a rough day and I thought it would be good to get my mind of work by installing some farkle on my sleeping strom. as a wisconsin resident, the pup's been put away since december and i've been longing to get back on her.
I got everything installed alright, tankbag, gps+mount and switched power and I turn the key to check to see that it works, it does except....
The d*mned thing is making all kinds of noises I don't remember... now before you yell at me let me tell you I didn't turn the engine over, I am just listening to what I believe is the injectors priming the cylinders. This sounds normal. But what doesn't is another noise that starts just about halfway through the sequence... Which sounds like a hard drive during write mode, on it's last legs. It also makes the noise while the throttle is being manipulated (during the first 1/5 of a turn). I didn't mess with it too much since I don't know what I am doing.
It's been such a long time since I've heard it that I just don't remember what it is supposed to sound like. I am also reluctant to turn the engine over for fear that it will blow up or something (or at least everything I've read points to not running the thing in the winter unless you can put on some miles/get it up to temp which I can't as the roads are salty and crap).
Dying to know if it is even going to start though...
I went back over my work and didn't notice anything funny, loose wires, etc.

The electric fuel pump is located inside the tank. It cycles when you turn the key to the on position and runs for a second or so.

I've got an early Vee, so things may be a little different, but I've never noticed a sound when twisting the throttle with the key on. Come to think of it, can't say that I've ever twisted the throttle with the bike not running and the key in the on position...

You are in an enclosed space, right?
Likely used to the sound of the bike with earplugs in and helmet on?

It's going to sound different...

If you decide to start it up, don't let it run too long in the enclosed space due to carbon monoxide and stinky fumes.

how terrible is it to run the bike in the winter if I am not going to let it run for any longer than 15 minutes...?

I suspect it is pretty bad.

That's the stepper motor turning the secondary throttle butterflies or the idle speed controller. Here's a video from Strange electrical noise
