Hey folks, I did a search for this and didn't find anything so thought I would post the question. My significant other and I would like to some long trips together but she finds the buffeting and noise when riding pillion too bad. I did quite a bit of research on the buffeting issue and know that it is a unique combination of factors such as helmet, height, mirrors, etc. We got the Madstad bracket as a start and that certainly helped. My question is what after-market shields have you found work well at cleaning up the air for the passenger too? Ideally I would like to pair a shield with the Madstad bracket for best results and quick adjustments. Any thoughts or experiences to share?

Thanks

Hey Gumption,

I'm in the same boat, going to the Grand Canyon next year and fighting the same battle. I've yet to get the madstad, but have figured that with that and the givi large shield or even suzuki large shield that'll help the lil woman. If you get something going I'd love to hear about it.

Another topic im interested in before i purchase a vee ;) Do you have a tailbag or backrest for the wife? I have to add one for sure and im wondering how that also will effect buffeting problem...so far madstad will be first add for sure...but I need her to be comfy right away or doing the trade up for the vee will come with misery for me...:p :-D

California Scientific has several heights available, has done a lot of aerodynamic work, and the guy who runs the place rides a V-Strom. The NACA duct seems to work to reduce buffeting.

He'll take it back if you don't like it, or custom modify it. I have the Tall.

I took a look at the calsci site. Their shields look good and I like the advice about getting the right height. Garandman, have you had any feedback from a pillion? Have you had a Givi on there too to compare? I am curious because it is quite a bit more than th Givi but if it works better...

Masked1, I do have a topbox on the bike. No doubt it makes my SO feel more comfortable on the bike--not so much for something to lean back against but to make her feel that she won't get launched off the back when the throttle opens up :-D

Any more recommendations about 2-up windshields?

I have the Givi as well. It is not quite tall enough for me. Never took a passenger for any extended distance with the Givi.

Windshield 2 up

I have a 650 and a St1300 Honda. I purchased a tall w/s for the Honda, so I had the stock w/s from the ST and got to looking and it seemed to look like it would fit. I took off the 650 strom mounts and drilled new holes in the St w/s, it works great, looks stock, and wife on back says it reduces wind noise for her.

The guy I bought my vee from has a wee and a Givi shield..rides 2-up everywhere and says it makes life much better for the passenger...he doesnt have the madstad bracket either.I think Gump what im going to go with is both the Givi and a madstad.Apparently the height can be a problem for sight reasons though.Once things warm up a tad Ill see it on his bike to see for sure.

Just an idea, On the california science site in the fairing section there was a method outlined on how to determine windshield height using a yard stick and a couple of objects placed at 30' and 60'. It was written as a way to figure out windshield height for the driver. I wonder if it would work for a pillon as well? If it does it takes the guesswork out of buying the right windshield no matter who makes it.

hey gumption:

welcome to strom world! I did not notice the buffeting when I test rode the V (Bought it in surrey from motorcycle world), cause I just rode it with my wife in the surrounding streets, but when I rode back to the valley down Hwy 1, wow! I thought my neck was going to snap!
The dealer had put a large windshield on the bike, but if you know brian, he is a small guy at 5'6" maybe, and he said the height was good for him. I raised it up one setting and about 1 week ago I added the spacers that some guys have tried.
I have not had it out with the spacer job done, but raising the sheild one setting made a huge difference, (i am 5'9") and my wife is cool with it!
Funny how this thread has three local guys responding eh????

Yup, us local boys have to help each other out! You are right that extra height makes a difference. We have the Madstad and when I use it to get the screen as high up as possible, it makes quite a difference for my passenger. It makes it much more tolerable for her. I am hoping that a larger screen will make a good thing even better.

I will post a pic when I learn how.. BONNIE!!!:p

Gump, I have a plus 6" givi and its very nice for 2 up. My wife and i can carry on a conversation at 50 MPH with no issues. It is also combined with the madstat in the middle height position. I am not sure how many sizes Givi offers as I have had it about 1.5 years now. But I know its at least 6" taller than stock. Some complain about the window line being in the middle of your visual riding path. I found it took about 1 month for it to no longer be an issue for me. I change the angle allot for airflow, hot...cold...rain and so on. I have not altered the height as I found the middle madsat to be just fine.
I am 5'10" and my wife is around 5'5".
I have also had the stocker, and some other high dollar windscreen that began with a "R" (Richie or something like that) I believe. That on was not compatable with the madstat and came with its own bracket. It was not nearly as nice as my current set up.
