Went down on my ride about a month ago. Banged up a bit with a separated shoulder and bike is mostly washed up when add up the parts cost. But I am an even bigger fan of ATGATT for sure! Crazy thing how a sudden vortex wind can blow one off the road. Happened suddenly out of nowhere on a day of a front blowing though. Yes, I was aware there was some wind as I had been riding for some time in it. Was coming out of a protected area of buildings and trees into a section of the road having a channel effect of trees and such. Had I been minutes sooner or later I might have never been affected to such a degree at that spot. Happened so fast yet seemed like slow motion while happening. Read about these things happening and ways to counter it but I guess experience is the best teacher and sometime maybe nothing could have been done in this case. Well there is always something that could be done I suppose......
Now I need to decide if the bike is worth fixing or find a duplicate to salvage and save the best parts or wash the whole thing and part it out to get something totally different. Decisions, decisions.....What say ye?

I've been hit by some wicked wind sheers when a cold front hits a warm front suddenly, and I've ridden in some terrible windy conditions and had no choice but to keep riding. I will ride in the center of lane as much as possible, or as far from the center line as possible away from the on coming lane, can for sure be butt clenching conditions.

GLAD youre(other than shoulder) Ok, could have been a lot worse. Not everything is in your control all the time.
As for your bike, dont know the condition or miles, or if insurance is involved.
14 years is 2-3 lifetimes on a bike. If the list is that high, I'd be searching for a later model, lower miles, in excellent condition. I'm REAL PARTIAL to the '14 and later DL1000 Vstroms...

Didn't have collision since only paid $2,500 for the bike. Getting some medical and riding gear covered under comprehension minus the helmet. They put that under collision, go figure and a limit on that also. Yea I know its a math game and a coin toss sometimes. But when look at the deductible, upgrade cost and all the fine print just didn't seem worth it knowing how insurance usually wins anyway. Now if it was some $25k Harley that out of pocket cost changes things! It's a 2004 V, 42k miles. Do have a few new goodies like brakes, tires, and fuel pump. Has the Brothers exhaust and PC. Guessing can eBay a bunch. Was gong to send the clutch basket in this summer so I guess thats not needed-LOL If I can find a cherry 07-12 V of the same build to use all my good parts where appropriate. Think most everything is transferable up to 2012???? There is a sweet low miles 2007 FJR that is singing in my ear. With riding currently just a fun weekend and occasional ride with friends in addition to the escape to and from work I want to keep the hobby cost down. I owned a boat once and know how that goes-hahaha

Wind or Fix?
Most have bad wind days eventually. I was lucky when my sidecar rig was thrown in the opposing lane on Hwy 50 but being the loneliest highway there was no other traffic.
Fix, i fixed my 04 Wee but it was only the headlight bucket and mounting bracket and windshield and the luggage. But other guys ins paid that.
i guess it's how little it would take to repair vs another $2500 find.

Let the injury heal and take stock.

Ultimately it's all about what makes you happy. I also have a 2500 dollar 04 Vee. At this point I've spent way more than I should have on it but it doesn't matter because I won't be selling it. Maybe another bike is the right answer for you or maybe you'll enjoy the project.

If you decide to part it out I'd be pretty interested in some of the bits and pieces to help get mine smoothed out.

Mose you can PM me on what is on your list of desires and see what is possible. I was running quickly down the path of no return with this one upgrading brakes, boots, hoses, sensors, etc, etc. so I respect the love of wanting everything perfect as it drives my wife crazy. I calculated near $3k in replacement parts using bikebandit.com reference so I think this rabbit hole runs deeper than my love. Made an offer on an 07 V and will see what he ponders. Going to look at an FJR tomorrow. Any others I should consider??? Rode a Tenere and liked it and didn’t at the same time. Gotta love the options! I kinda wish that guy had bit my offer on the 07 as I really wanted to use this new fuel pump a bit longer.

Making the bike whole, stock, again is one thing. Doing upgrades on a bashed carcass is another.
Better spend the $2500 on another donor bike.

A buddy has a '09 V in excellent condition up in Tallahassee. Had it for sale last year here and on CL for $3500 with no takers. If you are interested PM me as I think he still has it.

As for the wind, I have read a few threads on ADV where guys were simply blown off the highway by high winds, so it's not that uncommon. Glad you didn't get hurt or blown into those new cheese grater metal pole and cable systems that are springing up everywhere.

Thanks to all of the support and comments. Anyone needing any parts off this are welcome to PM me or will start seeing them on EBay as I get time to take them off and itemize everything. I don’t have enough points to post in the for sale section here that I know of. Or didn’t when I went looking and was restricted to there.

Stay safe!

You have the post count to sell in the for sale section, if you still can’t please let me know and I’ll work my magic.

Crosswinds in the Columbia River valley and nearby are terrible to ride in. I'll be doing 35 on I-90 trying to keep the bike in my lane. Some say there are cures for that by riding this way or that, but it's a real experience. Thank goodness you are OK. Bikes can be fixed.
