I have looked up the parts diagrams and they look very similar, but have different part numbers. The only difference I can see is the lower mount is shaped slightly different, but I can't tell if that will have any effect from a fitment standpoint.

Does anyone know, or has anyone tried using a shock from 2nd gen model onto one of the 1st gen DL650's?

It will fit. The later shock is slightly longer so it will raise the seat height a bit. Compare the two bikes at Motorcycle Ergonomics and swap between the two images to see the result.

Speaking of image swapping, load each year into its own tab and switch back and forth between the two tabs. The bottom hanger will change in shape but the cross bolt won't move at all.

I managed to swap the old shock for the new 2013 model. One thing I noticed is there was a small amount of play or space in the area where the lower shock bolt connects the cushion lever and the lower shock mount. The gap between outer edges of the cushion lever where it meets the lower mount of the shock is about 2mm - so it can be moved side to side a small amount. I'm pretty sure there was no gap present in this area with the original 2011 shock that was on there.

Acceptable or not? I could just insert some washers there, but wanted to hear any words from the wise before I do.

You don't measure the gap between the castings. You make sure the #12 tube is contacting both ears of the shock mount. The casting gap is irrelevant and was like that with the old shock. That part number tube is the same size 10x17x30 spacer used for all years of DL650.

Since that tube was not removed during the swap and you mentioned it's the same size for all years of DL650, then all should be good. I will double check it in the morning to make sure the tube touches both sides. Thanks for the quick reply.

Hi Rick. Was too busy the past few weeks to swap it out, but it's done now and went for a 50mile ride today. It was a noticeable difference in seat height and provided a much improved ride quality. I like it very much! My old shock was leaking, but I couldn't tell until I took it off the bike because it was so dirty.
Removing the preload adjuster took more time than anything else - I should have just cut it. Getting the new preload adjuster in took very little time.
