I've previously posted about my satisfaction with the Russell Day Long Saddle on my RT and HD. Soon after I bought my Wee I ordered one for it. My build date was 9/22, the finished seat arrived today. It looks great, and sitting on the bike feels great. I need to spend some miles in it to be sure but based on my past experience I'll be pleased. As my Wee is just intended for riding one up I went with the rider only option, vinyl, small square stitching, and the heavy suspension. I also bought a rain cover. Total price was $500 even.

Disclaimer: I am not in anyway affiliated with Russell Cycle Products, in spite of the fact that my last name is in their company name. The current owners of RDL aren't Russell's anyway. :)

While that looks comfortable, it ain't easy to look at (IMO). :( But then again, no one sees it when your butt is in it!

Looks kinda' like a padded tractor seat. Get out there and plow the north 40! :p

Probably comfortable if the junk in your trunk requires that kind of support! I guess at 6'4" you don't have any problem getting your feet down around that butt padding...

I tried this removable butt pad and it forced me forward on the tank and was noticible when putting my feet on the ground. I wonder what this is like.

interesting that you chose the small square pattern, some things I have lead me to believe it's the most comfortable option as it allows more even pressure and ventilation of your butt

with your other RDLs which stitching patterns do you have experience with ?

also intereresting you got the rain cover even with vinyl, does the stitching poke that many holes that moisture can become a problem?

I know those seats are renowned for comfort and build quality, but that square pattern is about as ugly as they get imo.

That said, when it's covered by a butt, rolling down the highway, I would imagine it's the least of anyone's concerns. :p

Mime came a week ago. Big rectangle pattern. They called to warn me that the seat would be an inch and a half higher than stock (DL650). They also said it would settle by a half inch or so after break-in. They were accurate on both statements.

At first, because of my newly shortened legs, I had to take the spacers/bushings off the seat pan just to be able to back the bike up without feeling like I was gonna dump it.

I've got 1100 miles on it now and it has settled enough for me to almost flat-foot it again. I'll put the bushings/spacers back and see how that feels because the seat wiggles without them in place. (not while I'm sitting on it)

After I get another 2,000 miles on it, I'll decide if I want them to make any changes. So far, it lives up to the "day long" name. I've done 360 miles in a stretch with NO discomfort, and maaaaaaan, I've tried everything.

I have not trouble, but am pretty tall. I know more vertically challenged riders with RDL seats, they have adapted by getting into a routine of sliding a bit forward when stopped which gives you room to get your legs down a bit better.

For me, I welcome the extra height. It opens up my knees a bit. I managed to get 50 miles in at lunch, it felt good.

I had half moons in leather on my RT, shown below. It was my first Russell. Both my pillion and I found it very slippery over time. My second Russell is on my Electra Glide, I elected to try vinyl and get the small squares. I think it looks as good as leather, and it is definitely grippier. This could be vinyl vs. leather, but I think the texture of the small squares helps. I too have heard folks mention that the small squares breath better, I don't know that I've noticed the difference.

The vinyl small square seats feel better to me, but there was also a process change at Russell between the time I got my original leather half moon version, and the vinyl square versions. They used to use foam from an outside vendor, now they make the foam themselves in house. It's suppose to be much more consistent. I did a ride in for the Harley seat and got to watch them doing the molding, it was pretty cool.

Russell recommends the rain cover when exposing seats to a lot of rain. I live in Oregon, I bought the covers for each of mine and have used the consistently. I haven't been in significant rain without the cover, so I'm not sure how things hold up.

With the cover in place, with pouring rain, when you are off the bike for a while you can just walk up to it, pinch the cover in the center, and shake it a few times. Your seat will be mostly dry and you can ride off comfortable.

Here are the small squares on the Harley the day I rode back from RDL. The Harley seat and the RT seat were both built two up. The Wee was not. If it was, the rear of the Wee would be tractorish too, like the HD and RT.

I didn't bother with the rain cover since I carry a bike cover when I'm on the road.

great tip, sounds like the cover might be worthwhile just for that purpose


the Russell Day Long is working it's way closer to the top of my extra spending priorities, the only other option I have been considering is heat, other than that I am planning the same options you have

I had heated seats on my RT. They retained the factory heat when they built my Russell for the RT. I think heated seats are over rated, but to each his own. When it was cold enough to want some warmth I would turn my seat on, then a bit later I would be just as cold but with a warm sweaty butt. At best I think it takes the edge off for some. I decided to get gerbings pants at some point. My *theory* is that more of me will be warm, and I can move them from bike to bike etc, and don't have to invest in heated seats everywhere.

I actually just leave my seat cover while riding in the rain. I've just assumed it would eventually be soaked when riding in rain all day. I tested this last year about this time with two long days across Montana and Wyoming in solid rain. Rained all night as well. On the morning of the third day I get ahead of it and the sun came out about 10am. I just slipped the cover off and into the tank bag. Everything was nice and dry.

I dunno. Randy rides all winter in northern New Hampshire. I'm in southern New England, but if I did more winter riding, I would have gone for the heat too.

I had it in a cage a few years ago and thought it was silly when I got it. The reality was that I hardly ever turned it off.

Oh, I like the idea about leaving the rain cover on.
