I've considered getting a wee several times through the years, but HATE wind buffeting on other bikes, and have always gone another route.

Well, I'm in position to check out an 04' wee on Wednesday, and have been reading through the stickied buffeting tab here. A thought occurred to me. On every other bike I've had, I've been happiest with the windshield removed. Nice clean air never seems to bug me. I've also read here that people with bigger windshields often have increased buffeting and vacuum effect.

So, has anyone ever tried to just remove the windshield and ride? Results? I'm hoping I'll be able to get a test ride to see if this is an issue for me, but 5 minutes or so on a bike doesn't tell you everything about it, and I'm hoping to gain the wisdom of others.

Thanks for your help

The bike looks a little weird (ok, weirder :)) with no shield at all, so I just cut mine down. I think I took 3 or 4 inches off of it. Nice smooth airflow now with no buffeting, and it's cooler in the summer. In the winter I put on a CeeBaileys screen.

madstad and givi screen solved the buffeting for me.

The previous owner of mine drilled additional holes in the stock windscreen so it could be mounted lower. That works well in the summer.

I think you mean less un-weird.

I've done it from time to time in the summer and have found it to be quite enjoyable until I encounter the first swarm of gnats in the early evening.

My stock shield is happy on a garage shelf

I add a black piece of tin to cover the brackets now holds my escort.

Vee's are BUFF so fashion not a problem.

There is the mysterious

Euro Shield which is a little thing that I think is cosmetic only

There is also a shield like National cycle or something which direct vorteces around your head.

Mine is staying nude up front

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the info. I've planned on buying a wee a couple times and it's always fallen through. I've got a deal to sell my GL1200 Standard tomorrow night after work. I am excited to see the wee, they don't seem to come up for sale all that often around here.

Riding with no screen at all right now while I wait for my Plexus to show up so I can clean up my CalSci.

Honestly, I love riding the bike with no screen, I'm so much more aggressive throwing it into tight corners, feels like more of a hooligan bike. Bit windy on the highway, but you know that. Pretty clean air, yup.

That looks good, I like it. Looks like it was made for the bike and gives it a more sporty look. I also see they are real cheap on eBay compared to Wee screens. Was it hard to mount? Did you just drill new holes? Is it mounted on a Madstad?

very interesting information ,,,i reall like the photo sweet bike stixx
Thanks. I love the "tunable MRA" Screens. I have an electric screen on the RT and it spoiled me for getting the sweet spot setting for max coolant to helmet vents and minimize turbulence so the adjustable bracket from Madstad and the MRA windscreen with flap adjustment is the best
set up I found on the wee after much experimentation.

F4i screen

Hi Kevin,

The hardest part was locating the screw holes (find centreline of screen, decide on height of screen, measure hole spacing on original...). Otherwise it was 1]drill holes, and 2] trim the point off the bottom/front (optional). It's easier if you drill the two upper holes, mount and mark for the remaining holes.

No Madstad. The picture is in the middle setting.

Re: eBay screens. Most of the really cheap ones I've seen are double bubble types, which may work on a sportbike, but on the Strom it will be mounted more vertically. There are some aftermarket screens with standard curvature, but I haven't seen them cheap, except second hand.

I have not tried the Wee without a screen, but my other bikes are naked and I prefer them that way. BUT - I ride them around town and in the twisties, and not for long hauls. The Wee is my touring machine, and I must have a shield.

My write-up for the best solution I have found (actually, fellow member Erik invented and tested it) is here: (no affiliation, and not cheap)

Thanks guys. I'm not afraid of wind on the highway. On my current bike, the one I'm selling today, I took the windshield off for my trip from Idaho to Montana a month ago, and same thing for last year's trip from Idaho to Northern California and back on a 3 day weekend. The California trip was end of March, and I missed the screen because it was COLD. Other than that, I enjoyed the fresh, clean air. No problems at all in Montana (with the screen at least).
