I'm thinking of heading over the Sierra and out to the White Mountains this coming weekend (11-12) -- weather permitting, of course.

Anyone been on the road up from 168 to the Bristlecone Pines? I checked the Inyo NF website, and apparently it's open to Schulman Grove but no further. Is it even worth going if you can't visit Patriarch Grove?

Also, any recommendations for places to stay in Big Pine? Bishop is hosting a big event next weekend & is probably booked solid. And I don't camp.

Thanks everyone!

Big Pine Ca.

Schulman Grove is at the end of the paved road at 10,000 feet and is well worth the ride. I did it last year by bycycle out of Big Pine.

I spent two nights at the Starlight Motel in Big Pine. Neat and clean at a reasonable price. Call ahead for reservations. I think there are three other motels in Big Pine. You can always stay up at Bishop which has a lot of motels and places to eat.

For food in Big Pine I recommend Bud's Uncle ( Uncle Buds ) which serves pizza and good snadwiches on home made bread along with good salads. I did not try the pizza, but I heard it is real good.

Other good rides I would recommend are Onion Springs west out of Independence and Horseshoe Meadows west out of Lone Pine. I will be doing that one next month by bicycle along with trying the top seven miles of White Mountain by Mountain Bike.

You will be hard to go wrong in that area for great rides. Maybe some day I will get down there on my DL650.

Thanks for the great info! I'm not sure whether I'll make it down there this weekend... I'm still getting over a nasty cold and I have some work to catch up on. Maybe July 4th weekend. I'll be up in your neck of the woods in mid-July though... gotta ride 36 at least once a year. :)

Just rode 36 today between Bowman Road to South Fork summit and back. It is one of our favorites. There is also some great riding north of Lewiston and Weaverville. Callahan, Etna, and Fork of Salmon loop is another good one.
