My never ending quest for extended saddle time has brought me back to questioning if i've really made any progress. I started on a Ninja 250, which was obviously too small for a 6'1" 190lbs person, but it was the learning bike. I moved to the Kawasaki ZR7s, which to those who don't know; it kinda a 'sporty standard', which did increase comfort, but after about 1 hour or so hurt my knees. Onto the DL platform which solved the knee problem, but still has some limitations, mostly my butt area. Current setup is Gel seat with Sheepskin. Yesterday I did two 85 miles slab runs with 50 miles of twistys in between. Not too bad, but the last 40 were definitely uncomfortable.

Am I just expecting too much? I try all the tricks, mostly moving around, spandex, stretching, advil, even putting my legs (which are kinda long) on the passenger pegs and tucking in on the freeway, which allows me to get out of the wind for a bit.

Honestly, I start to wonder if my style or riding is more on the sport touring end of the needs, like a ST1300/C14/FJR/RT style.

I guess what i'm interested in is your average saddle time/distance and ideas on comfort. Especially the tall people.

Depends what I'm doing, but if I'm touring I'll sometimes do a full tank before I stop to stretch. So that's about 300km or 190mi. Sometimes I'll stop a couple times per tank, especially if it's slow going and I get tired of sitting. 12-13 hour days are frequent, even for a day ride. Lots of stops though.

I'm 6'6" and 225lbs. I have used the stock seat with a beaded cover for a lot of miles. Also lower and more forward bars. I bought a used Corbin seat, and my butt is happier, however now I get sore hips. I changed back to stock bars, and it is somewhat better with the Corbin. I'm now looking at custom seats, but will use the stock seat/beaded cover in the mean time.

I just came home from a 2 hour ride on my DRZ. I think that is comparable to a full day on the VEE. :frown: Imagine sitting on a 2x4 covered with a little padding.

6'4" I used to have some hip, manly discomfort, etc. with various stock seats, but nothing since I got a Sargent. The limitation of my enjoyment is pain in the muscles between my shoulder blades. Most of my rides are sub-100 mile due to time constraints, but did 400-200-400 last summer to visit and ride with my dad. Between-shoulder pain was the only real problem I had. I have some mild up-and-back risers, but might try a more extreme solution. Got to get that pain addressed. All else is good.

I like to be able to do 600 mile or so days on my long distance rides. That means 10-12 hours or so saddle time. To do so, the seating position, the comfort of the seat and what I need to do to control the bike are important.

On my Wee, I think the seating position is fine for me. It's reasonably upright and my arms are in a comfortable position. The seat (I have the Vee seat on my Wee) may need a bit of work before I'm comfortable on it for that long a time. For the controls portion, I added the Rostra CC. That allows me to rest my arms/hands for significant periods of time and frequently use only one hand (either one) to control/guide the bike.

I'm just under 6' tall so do not have some of the issues taller riders experience.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't really sore at the end of that day, but I did it. That's really the key. Some bikes are more suited to long distances than others but none of them are going to be comfortable if your mindset is to focus on any discomfort. If long distance motorcycle touring was easy, everyone would do it.

My Vee is a sofa compared to the TLR with it's Sargent seat and ADVmotostuff highway pegs. When touring on the Vee I'm usually kickstand up just before dawn and ride as long into the dark as I feel safe depending on my awake status and wildlife.

I find that my fun factor is maxed at about 6 hours of riding, which coverts to 250-300 miles depending on the route. I just find at that point that I've had my fill of riding and am ready to get off the bike. Physically I'm fine but mentally I'm worn at this point.

Normal touring and dayrides are 10-13 hours with stops coming 75-150 miles apart, longer mileage and shorter stops early in the day, less mileage and longer stops later on. Always eat breakfast and a late lunch/early supper. Riding in daylight only, 3-700 miles, ~400 avg.

Lots of variables like heat, wind, rain, cold, long straight roads, traffic, forced stops, etc determine how quick my comfort and enjoyment levels diminish. Normally, I'm good for around 8 hrs, sometimes more, sometimes less.

In my perfect world, I'd ride 10 hours every day on a constant variety of rural twisty hilly roads, 75-80 degrees, dry, partly cloudy, no breeze untill stopped, no speed limit, no traffic, no stop signs or traffic lights, and arrive at a secluded shaded streamside campsite in a different location every evening. Mileage not a factor. There's little chance I'd get tired of this before dieing of old age.

On my Wee I can do 3 or 4 hours tops in a day and I'm ready to get off of it, and that is with stops every hour or so.

On my Harley Ultra, I can do 10 hour days easy.

Bike setup is important, but your physical condition counts for a lot too. Some bodies are more tolerant of minor misalignments and pressure points for longer periods.

The type of riding matters a lot too. As long as I'm well-rested, the mental demands usually catch up with me before the physical ones. More technical riding takes more out of me. I can usually comfortably do about 12 hours of interstate, 8-10 hours of 2 lane, 6 hours of forest or mountain roads before I start to lose focus.

My longest day so far was Edmonton AB to Seattle WA via Jasper, which is around 820 miles, in just over 14 hours. I was ok with it because I was in familiar territory on easy interstate for the last leg. I wouldn't do that in an unfamiliar area.

That was with the Suzuki gel seat and Madstad bracket, but no other comfort-related mods, FYI.

GORGEOUS BIKE! I've always loved the TLs (TLR and RLS). I always wanted a TLS, myself. Kudos to you for riding that long of a distance. Why did you sell it?

I loved the TLR it was great fun. I put ~40,000 miles on it over 4 years and did quite a bit of touring on it. Eventually I sold it and bought both an Aprilia Mille R for play and a VFR750 for two-up and touring. Then those two bikes were sold to make room for the V-Strom. I test rode the Wee first, but bought a Vee because the engine reminded me of the TLR. :mrgreen:

BTW, the TLR was sold about a week after that pic was taken. All the good aftermarket bits had already been stripped off and sold. Here it was with all the good bits still in place:

I was racing CMRA (endurance) when the TL line came out. That TLR sounded bad ass ripping down the straight at Texas World Speedway. It was a yellow one. :) The inline fours were by far more popular but it was awesome seeing that bike being raced.

Im 6'6 210. Ive had my wee for about a month now. Ive done about 300 miles straight and my but was kind of sore but everything else was good. I think if i get a gel seat it will be better.

I'm 6'2" and 220lbs.

I've got the Gel seat and highway pegs on mine. An average day when touring is about 650 miles. Usually, it's a twelve hour day with stops about every three hours for fifteen minutes or so (or to snap a picture or fifteen). I find I can go way further with the gel seat that the stock one but I'm also experimenting with PUG performance undergarments right now, and I've got to say, they make a difference. No nasty seams digging into you in all the wrong places.

I'm currently around 245 lbs, and 6'2" tall. I have had arthritis for the last 25 or so years. I can't normally sit on my couch for more than a couple of hours without having to get up for a moment. I can ride my bike non-stop up to about four hours without much problem; but I'll usually take a break at two to three hours. A short break or light meal and I can keep on riding.

I have had a Corbin seat for the last three years. I have one inch risers, wear earplugs and added highway pegs a few years ago.
