Hi everyone,

New to this website. I've been an avid/competitive offroad motorcycle guy for 36 of my 43 years. Have ridden and owned street bikes on and off just for the last 25 years. I'm considering buying a Vstrom 1000 and I'm not sure why other than it seems like everyone who own's one thinks it's the greatest bike in the world which I find really weird. I have never ridden one but only looked at them in the store and just recently even gave it any consideration. To me there is no such thing as too much power. The Vstrom has a cool looking Vtwin which sits in a unique looking bike. Some parts of the Vstrom look kind of nerdish and the the suspension is antequated in the dirtbike world. If a person is buying it to ride on pavement then wouldn't there be better choices like the ST1300 and many other sport touring bikes for that? OPbviously if your on gravel roads the sport touring bikes are out of the question. My last street bike was a 120HP machine and I never thought it has too much power so why should I buy a Vstrom 1000?:confused:

Nothing. It's not the greatest bike in the world. It just does many different things decently well.

It's not very powerful either. My 600 puts down more power than this lump. It's just fun.

It's a great all-rounder, quick, fairly light, capable of some off roading, reliable, and very reasonably priced. If you want power go look at a V-Max, but don't try and take it off road. Yes there are better off road bikes, but they fall short on road. For a twin it's darn good, mine will outrun my neighbors 2,000 cc Kaw. cruiser, and out handle it. It just depends on what you want. Maybe a Vstrom is the wrong bike for you ?

I am generally happy with my 650
The bike is a good allround bike not the best bike at one thing or another .
Take look at the rider's age ,we are generally more mature and are after ONE bike to do whatever we want ,we improve it for what we want .

I like travelling 14 hour days ,but I live in a country that will remove your licence and YOUR bike if you ride 25 mile per hour over the limit , you can even get free accomidation in jail and fines in the thousand to go with it .As our maxmium speed limit is 110 kph ( 68 mph ) it's not much point in having a high top speed .A lot of our country roads go for miles without anywhere to turn off so one Policeman at one end and another at the other end gets most speeders .It can be very profitable for the government.

This is a bike for the road less travelled and someone who wants to enjoy themselves .
If you want to get somewhere fast take a plane , if you want to enjoy yourself get a Vstom,because it is surprising what you find down some dirt roads.

Now I am not knocking big touring bike I like them ,but I am probably past realy fast 1000klm days in sub 8 hour times on roads that you would call backroads in the USA ,been there 30years ago not interested anymore.


Remember its the attitude of the rider and what HE/She get's out of riding their bike as long as they are happy that's all that counts.

People may ride fast bike and want to race I just say "how many LAPS of Australia ONE or TWO ". I have been saying that for thirty plus years to speed freaks gets them everytime .

The DL1000 is the best combination of what I like per dollar spent. Every bike has a loyal following. Doesn't mean it's the best bike for you or I, though. Go ride one. That's the only way to know.

A few years back Discover Magazine had an articcle about Beauty. It seems that if you morph together the faces of any ramdon group of women you end up with a face that is incredibly beautiful. I turns out that beuty isn't about being spectacularilly different, but beign spectacularilly average.

The V-Strom range is incredibly average. V-Stroms do nothing amazingly well but do a lot of things very good, and the everyday ability that doesn't constrain you to any one type of riding is likely what makes the bike so appealling.

Can't speak for others. I tired of the cruiser style/ highway bikes. Compared to my modded out Valkyrie, a modded out Vee handels the backroads very well. Lot of fun and decent power. I've recently acquired a KLR 650 to take dual sporting a little further. Different strokes for different folks. :beatnik:

I bought DL 1000 after putting 57,000 miles on a 1200 Bandit that was improved with better suspension and piped and jetted. The Dyno numbers were about 80 ft/lbs and 120 hp at the rear wheel. Not the biggest and baddest but respectable at least. The reason I traded off the B-12 was my knees would bother me on long rides, I needed a greater seat to peg height and the V-Strom fit the bill. I thought I might miss the power and handling of the Bandit but have found the V to be all right,it's probably a second slower in the 1/4 mile than the B-12 but still 11 secs. is still way faster than most cars. And with the longer wheel base the V turns in a little slower but I still can get a peg down so again it's no slouch. The pluses for the V to me are the seating position makes it possible for me to ride the all day type of rides I like to do with no knee pain. The fuel range is about 200 miles vs. the B-12's 125 miles to reserve. The V-Strom all so gravel roads much better than the B-12 so that opens up a lot of riding for me. So for me and the type of riding I do I think the big V while not perfect is a better bike for me.

You should not buy a DL1000.....unless you love the feel of a torgue monster V-twin with standard Rider ergonomics,or if you like to ride twisting winding roads [ Gravel or paved] . If you love riding a bike with minimum maintenance and fair ground clearance, headlights that look like death rays, and only want to fill up the tank every 210 miles or so .[I average 39 mpg.].. then you might want to get one ...Mine is going on 5 seasons and has 49000mi. all of which I put on .....I cant wait to go on my first long trip!!!:thumbup:

no, not at all. i prefer the light weight, standard ergo's and comfort of the DL1 over st bikes.

I have always ridden Euro style bikes (goin' on 35yrs now) and have been schooled by oldtimers who are of the opinion that you can go just about anywhere on a standard bike. My body no longer folds into the sportbike riding position so I ride a Strom. Also the older I get the less it gets to be about the bike and the more it gets to be about the ride. Its light, agile and frugal, fast enough for me and cheap to own. whats not to like?

I see a couple you have been there done that too and I appreciate that in put. Crotch rockets never really have done it for me either since being bent over is uncomfortable. Actually toyed with the thought of a cruiser but I think I would be unhappy trying to make a bike corner like a sportbike and lack any kind of power of a muscle bike and then having to stop at every bar does not sound like fun to me. A motorcycle does not define me. I think if all your friends ride one style of bike then your better off buying that type of bike but my friends ride the 3 main catergories of cruiser, sport and muscle bike. I remember going for a short ride with my friends last summer one was on an st1300 and the other on the pornstar 1100. 45 minutes later we stopped for icecream and the guy on the pornstar 1100 was blown away how fast we were riding which caught me off guard since the guy on the st1300 and I which was on my gpz 1100 road a comfortable speed at times form 80-100mph and didn't think anything of it and it just made me realize it's hard to ride with a cruiser if your not on something just as slow and ill handling. I'm hoping vstrom 1000 can cruise in that 100-120mph range with a top speed of 140mph+ which I would really never care to ride at that speed anymore anyway but don't want the bike wrapped out when it's near a 100mph. Is this reasonable?:yesnod:

I HATED mine at first and was REALLY disappointed that i bought it. had running issues and ergo issues and service issues. i was ready to default on the loan and let the bank take back the POS. but a few tweaks and additions and changes and it has grown on me. i really do like it now. reasons i bought it? size for two up, available farkles, CANNOT beat the price compared to other new bikes that are capable of this one. Price was the deciding factor.

Well then this isn't the bike for you. Yes, the bike will do 120, but it works very hard at it.

Have you considered an FZ1 or bandit?

Not so sure what's so great about the VStrom 1000? It's basically a 650 (which is the best bike ever made) and they added 350cc's.:biggrinjester:

My 2007 Vee has done everything I wanted or hoped it would .... and then some.
It's taken my wife and I places that I never dreamed I be going, and 46,000km without any mechanical breakdown problems. I've ridden it into remote places where I shouldn't be and the Vstrom been kind enough to me to get me home.
Certainly there are bikes that do perform better for specific uses. But I'm an old guy, I don't drag my pegs but I'm no slouch either, and for my riding style of just wanting to go exploring, have some fun and get home safely ..... the Vee is a blast.

I hear you.
My last bike made over 150hp, and when I tried the vee, I was dissapointed.
After spending a whole year bikeless, I bought a new wee (dl-650) and am happier than a pig in shit; many vee (dl-1000) owners are just as happy as I am.

For what it's worth, the vstrom corners very well; my friend who is an expert rider and was on a k1200gt could not get away from nor catch me in the twisties (I consider myself a novice rider with a dozen years of experience)

The strom probably sucks as a dirtbike, but I still took it offroad (it was my first time in something rougher than a gravel road); I did not drop it.

I laugh at your mention of the st-1300; you seem oblivious to the fact that it weighs almost 800 lbs.

The strom's charm (if I may call it that) is that it is a very easy bike to live with. It's easy to ride, easy to maintain, very dependable, and will happily take you wherever you want to go.

It's the bike everyone will eventually end up with if they want a real-world bike. I think you should join our ranks; if you truly enjoy motorcycling, you'll love the strom (It's not perfect, but nothing comes as close to "good enough" as the strom does)

My only regret is that mine will roll over 100,000kms before I'm done paying for it.

Addendum: the best part about the strom is you never need to think about it when you're riding; it lets you focus on the ride/traffic/scenery and you completely forget the machine.

No, really. Having had a couple of bikes in the past, and having ridden virtually every kind of style, I knew what I wanted. I didn't ride what I owned before because it wasn't versatile and/or comfortable.

I wanted a relatively modern bike that had the UJM ergos, hard bags, two-up comfort, and could do everything I asked of it better than average, if nothing spectacularly.

I showed my wife the ad for the used '03 with factory bags. She said "It ONLY costs THAT much? And it does EVERYTHING you want?"

"Yeah." I replied. "It's hard to find these around too." I said that cuz it's true here. It's the only one that popped up in Wisconsin in the for sale forum here for a LONG time.

"You should buy it."

'nough said.
