Highway or city riding? I was just reading another thread about chains pre-maturely wearing so I got to wondering. What do you guys think is harder on the chain and sproket highway or stop n' go city riding... all things considered equal of course. I thought it would be obvious before I seriously thought about it, now I am not so sure...

Stop and go. I went through 2 sets in 18,000 kilometers. I had to replace everything twice. The constant torque changes kill the sprockets.

Dirt and sand

Properly lubed, the chain should wear slowest with a steady moderate load, which is probably highway miles, assuming you're not going 120 MPH. I suspect if you're abusive with the clutch (burnouts, etc.) or power-shift (no clutch, full throttle) the high transient loads will take their toll. But nothing wears sprockets as fast as riding in dirt, and especially sand.
