Hi folks:

I have an '05 V-Strom. Been getting as low as 41 and as high as 49 MPG on my '05 V-Strom fully loaded with way too much crap. Last fillup was 46MPG I'm just curious to see how this ranks with other people. It seems on the low end from my research; but then again I'm really tall and I have this weighted the heck down. I also know in '07 they improved fuel economy.

I'm 6'6" and 185 pounds. I'm wondering:

1) What is your fully loaded (with all your luggage packed) gas mileage?
2) What year and make (Wee versus Vee)?
3) What is your height/weight (just for curiosity)

Over two trips this year, one of 8500 kilometres and one of 2500 Km, my average is 57 miles per gallon. Low of 44 MPG (Dillon, MT to West Yellowstone - high winds) and a high of 68 MPG (Pahrump, NV to Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley). I weigh about 180 (+ gear) 5' 11.

Depending on speed, air temperature, altitude and windscreen size, I get 40-50mpg in the touring configuration below. The extremes are between 55-75mph.

In a sport configuration with speeds in the 30-65mph range around home, I get around 60mpg.

I weigh about 200lbs.

Sounds right to me. My 07 Wee turned in a worst of 33.12mpg and best of 60.44mpg fully loaded on my Alaska trip. Best was, literally, 55mph GPS speed for 120 miles before we stopped to stretch and get gas. Slowest I've ever ridden in my life.

As you can see, average was 42.79.

I got this

packed like this

2 years earlier did about the same trip in 10 days averaging 460 miles a day. Fuel mileage for the DL650 on that one was 50.9 mpg avg, the VTX1800 was 40, the goldwing 1800 was 44.

We averaged 53 mpg on a 1 week, 2,000 mile trip, 2 weeks ago. 2-up with luggage packed full and an extra bag tied on to WV, from Plattsburgh,NY. Then local riding in West Virginia on paved and dirt roads. 2011 650.

Fully loaded trip from KY to Glacier NP and back last summer. I averaged somewhere around 49mpg, lots of hwy riding at 75-80 mph (GPS speed). Worst was 36mpg in Kansas with some killer head winds, best was 61mpg around Montrose CO. (not sure why, altitude maybe?).

My normal riding around town is about 46 mpg but I can get 50 mpg if I keep the speed down.

My '07 Vee regularly see's 48-50mpg with E360 saddlebags and 52 Maxia top case. I run the stock shield with a madstad. I'm 6'02" and near 300# geared up. My bike is stock (engine wise) with only a K&N filter and a set of 2 Bros. cans w/db killer tips. Stock map in the ecu.

I ride mostly at about 5000 rpm on 2-laners (64mph actual) and I usually get just under 50 mpg. If I ride slower it gets better but that's very rare.

Gas mileage depends more on your speed than whether the bike is loaded or not. I got just shy of 60mpg on a trip at the beginning of August.

Two things about that particular tank of gas: It was ethanol-free gas purchased in Grand Falls, NB, and I didn't take the bike over 50mph.

That's my experience as well.

I have had occasion to do extended runs at 60 MPH and have gotten close to 60 MPG.

At high speed, I don't think weight has as great an effect on fuel consumption as aerodynamic drag.

I've done two, heavily loaded, longer trips this summer and have averaged 44.7MPG on both. The first trip was to WestFest in Darby, MT in late July -- 5300 total miles. The second was to the Guzzi Rally in northern Michigan just last weekend -- 1200 total miles. Both trips included lots of high speed running (70+MPH) and frequent head winds (why is it always going the other direction?).

My '09 Wee has Aerostitch tank panniers, large tank bag, large aluminum rear cases and a Givi top box -- (it pushes a lot of wind). These are all loaded and I carry my tent, sleeping equipment and chair on the passenger's seat. Packed, with me on it and a full fuel tank, it weighed 880# on the State scale at Butte, MT.

For how I'm loaded and how I'm riding, this fuel mileage is acceptable to me. I know the tank panniers are costing me possibly up to 10%, but I want the extra carrying capacity and like the added weather protection.
