small flashlight, cell phone, small radio to plug into my Starcom system, MP3 player when there's no radio reception, digital tire gauge.
I also carry some stromtrooper business cards I made with just some basic info (email address and stromtrooper.com site) in case I meet a fellow strommer in my travels. When you meet someone at a traffic light and only have a minute or less to exchange info I found it easier to pass a card. And only my name and email address is on it so I don't have any crazies calling me LOL
Everyday items in top case: Rainsuit, mini air compressor w/ tire repair kit, duct tape, bungee cords, 24mm wrench and needle nose pliers for chain adjustment, extra cotter pins for castlenut on axle. Still allows room for helmet+gloves, or like sized items if going to store.
I carry more in the sidecases when I have them on, but normally they are only used for longer trips.
Wow! That is a deversified question. Depends on what you think you need. As the years and miles go by traveling over the US back roads I think I pack less and less.
I just returned from about a 5 thousand mile trip from California's Central Country. I used a Beta bag by Wolfman instead of hard saddle bags this trip. Also were a JC Whitney Tail trunk, Marsee magnetic tankbag and Aerostich Tank Panniers.
So, lets go with what I packed for the trip and need nothing.
Wolfman Beta Bag > 2 jeans; 4 tshirts; 2 long sleeve tshirts; 4 pairs socks and under shorts; Widder vest , gloves and wiring; Straped to the Beta bag was my bike cover and could stap jacket and overpants to it when not needed as in too hot.
JC Whitney Tail trunk > Coffee and pot; tools, tire kit and compressor; Computer and wiring; handy wipes; chain lube; extra towel for bike.
Marsee Tankbag > Notebook and pens; camera, medications, .380 automatic, 2 washrags: present book I was reading; two small flashlites.
Aero tank panniers > rain gear; coffee cup; shaving kit; water bag w/ tube and bite valve.

Riding clothing. If it rains or changes temperature to an uncomfortable degree, the remedy is in the top box. The items are relatively light and need to be accessible in a hurry. That includes raingear, face and neck mask, jacket and pants inner liner, breath guard, electric vest and gloves including external wiring, fleece sweat shirt and other color face shield. A few items that may be needed during each trip during the ride like medicines, a book for meal and relaxation stops, and a tire pressure guage are in there too. Heavy stuff or stuff that is only needed at the motel are in the side cases.
Under the seat:
- tool kit
- air compressor
- tire repair kit
- tow straps
- flash light
In small handle bar bag:
- garage door opener
- tire pressure guage
- extension mirror for checking oil
- small key chain LED light
In tailbag or trunk:
- clear helmet visor (if I'm wearing a tinted one during the day)
- rain suit and shoe covers
- shade cover (keeps the damn birds from chittin' on my seat/dash at work)
- bottle or two of water
This is just for the daily commute. The side bags go on and any number of other things go in for long trips. Main things are extra clothes, of course, and things like chain lube, spray cleaner, etc. The big thing in hot climates, always take more water than you think you need. I'll often strap a small soft sided ice chest to the passenger seat. On a previous bike I was stranded in the middle of Nowhere East Texas in the middle of August, with no shade, for hours before I could get a tow. That would have really sucked without extra water.
