I've found an older HD trunk (cheap $$) 14"h x 24"w x 19"L (that's 6384 cu in) it will be a bolt on, with a top rack to hold my Chase Harper solf bag. My thoughts are, the HD trunk for the stuff I plan to leave on the bike and the other bags (3) can be removed as needed.
Any thoughs from you guys that spend lots of time on long trips?????
Thanks!

If my math is correct, that is 3.69 cu ft?

according to google. 1 cu ft = 28.3 liters

3.69 x 28.3 = 104.4 liters?

That would be huge, again, if my math is correct. More than twice as big as my givi 45l?

Plenty of room!

lol....aint math and measurements funn!!

12x12x12 = 1728 cu in

6384/1728 = 3.69 cu ft

3.69 * 28.3 = 104.43 L

In the case of my case, a givi 45L, you are correct, it is not square.
done the same way, mine calculates to almost 47 L. So, without calculus/trig and I cant imagine what it would take, close is close enough for general comparison purposes.

So, the HD case in question will hold prox twice as much as my 45L.

my math

When I figure the size, I do the old, L X W X H = CI = correct?
I've done this on all the trunks I've been looking at, this is the biggest by far. HD seems to have the largest trunks. Yes the rounded corners are a problem when figuring. I don't what the rectangle is going to do to the aero. The BMW I have, the air hits the small of my back, don't know if it's the bike or the rectangle trunk.
So, to you long trip folks, do you think this bolt on HD trunk, set up will work okay??
Thanks

Had that on my ST1300. Added the backrest to it. Held an absolutely incredible amount of stuff. In fact held so much that I had to make sure I didn't overload it from a weight standpoint. Aesthetically it worked well on the Honda. I tried it on the FJR1300 I replaced the ST with and the looks were not so pleasing. I think it might be a bit much (aesthetically) on the slimmer the VStrom; but looks are very, very subjective.

If you like it ... go for it. BUT, watch the weight issue. It is so big it is easy to overload.

As an old KLR guy, I have seen a lot of guys use Action Packers bigger than that, so yeah, it should be fine. But I agree with Banks C, watch the weight, and even the weight distribution.

I am a painting contractor and every chance I get I use the bike to save gas vs a pickup. I can deliver 10 single gallons of paint in 3 givi bags, a 45L and two 36's. I have to watch the distribution of weight with odd loads. If my load is wonky, the ride can get wonky too.

I am still trying to figure out how to carry 5-gallon pails with the bike ..... A trailer would be handy. A hack would be handy. 12 to 15 miles per gallon on a pickup forces creativity.

An HD top box on a Suzuki?

I dunno. Everyone has different tastes, and if you're happy, that's all that counts. They are roomy & nice, but I don't think they are that much roomier than a GIVI 52 Maxia, maybe a bit is all. But, you do need to watch out for overloading it. You don't want too much weight on the rear tire. I've seen some awful big loads on the back of bikes, not counting the ones whose asses hang over the sides! I took a 33 day long trip in '06 on my old Sprint ST, and with a full tank, two up, and tank bag, side bags, and top box fully loaded, I was weighing 1000 pounds gross, 640 on the rear and 360 on the front. Just like the manual showed as the max weights allowed. So, you should take that into account. I haven't checked the VStrom's max weight allowances, but you should before over doing it.
Just sayin'
