I've been looking at buying a Vstrom because I want a comfortable upright bike that I can pretty much do anything with. Also, looking at the fz6. Anyway, this is a local bike I have looked at and like for the most part. It's not in perfect cosmetic condition and it seems like it has been sitting for quite awhile...years perhaps. I haven't been able to get that much info yet because it is being sold on consignment and the shop doesn't know anything about it.
~35k miles, at least one case lets water in, also I took it for a test drive and the brakes feel "spongy" and it died on me. It took about 5 minutes to get it started again and had to keep the throttle at 4k rpms for about a minute before it would idle normally. It made it back the .5 miles to the shop but I didn't really get to test much after that fiasco.

Hello, and welcome!
I'd ask the shop to contact the owner, and see if they would contact you about the bike. That would be the best way to learn about it. That's what I did when I bought my bike from a dealership used. The PO of my bike also had kept some accessories that I got cheap.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to call the shop today and try that. I'm just worried I will end up with something that is too much of a work in progress and keep me from enjoying the ride!

I would avoid an 05 if it is a 1000, if it is a 650 I would say go for it. We can all help you here get it sorted out, that won't be an issue. The 1000 models are just so finicky, I doubt you would be happy with all the adjusting and checks you would need in order for it to run like it should, the 05 1000 is also the worst running year for fuel injection mapping.

It's a 650. Yep, trying to balance cost savings, diy repairs, and just getting out and riding with out fear of issues. Thanks for your input!

Have you made up your mind between the FZ or the Wee? I think you need to decide that first. After that, are you comfortable working on the wee? You being here, I'm thinking you are.

Still my question to you is, are you thinking of going off payment? Don't get me wrong, my wee is a great road bike and I'm using it on payment a lot but I'm thinking its not a FZ on blacktop.

Good questions. Both bikes have qualities that I'm looking for and I'm not convinced there is ONE bike to satisfy everything I want.

I don't like to troubleshoot mechanical issues but I'm comfortable fixing them.

Offroad - probably only gravel and grass occasionally.

If you will ride gravel/grass, I would go with the wee. I don't know how big you are but you rode one, it is a big bike to take off road. I am not a big guy. Gravel roads and easy trails, that's about all I will do with mine. The FZ (never rode one) should be better on pavement. Just depends on how hard you ride. No one bike will do everything well, you sacrifice something.

If you can fix it, you are in the right place for help. The last decision is, if you want a DL. Do you want this one? Like mentioned there are many around.

In my opinion, an 05 wee for 3K at a shop better run perfect, it won't look perfect but it is 11 years old. There are way better deals to be had on the 650's. Keep shopping.

I would agree. Way to much with this mileage and specially if it's not in perfect condition. For this money you should be able the get one 3 years newer with ABS and lover mileage. Just spend more time looking around.

Thanks everyone, that's the advice I was looking for. I called the shop and asked about getting some questions answered or contact info for the current owner. I haven't heard anything back yet. It doesn't really matter because I ended up buying the fz6. I'm going to continue to hang around this forum because I feel like a vstrom is in my future!

Good luck with the fz6 and ride safe. I have never had the opportunity to ride one but they appear to be very good bikes.

You should be very happy with the FZ6. It'll handle moderate off road stuff just fine (dirt and gravel/rock roads), but I wouldn't go trailblazing on it.
I have taken my FZ6 many places it shouldn't have gone, in some ways the FZ6 is a better gravel/dirt road bike than the Strom because of the lighter weight. Wouldn't suggest to take it on rocky off road trails because of the lack of available bash plate, but I have, and it survived fine.

It's late now, but you made the right choice not to buy that Strom. Unless a bike is way below market value, never ever pick up a bike that needs that much work. Just think, those are the problems that you found, imagine how many problems you didn't find.

The FZ6 is probably my favourite bike I've owned to date. That bike is comfortable doing pretty much anything.

Dunno why I did not mention earlier (although obviously too late) more competitive to the fz6 from Suzuki is the sv650. Another bike I have not ridden yet but almost never hear negatives about it. Blah blah blah (shut up Vin), just have fun, ride safe and enjoy your new bike.

Lol, I don't think I'm going to try to blaze any trails.

I actually just switched from the sv650! Not where I wanted to be comfort wise.

FZ6 is a blast so far and very comfortable.
