I purchased an RK GB525XSO chain for my wee strom and wanted to pass along a couple things I learned when mounting it. I puchased their clip type master link thinking that I could pull the chain off the bike every few hundred miles to clean it, much easier than pulling the bike apart to take it off and less messy than doing it on the bike.
All I can say is that this particular clip link will not work. There is no way you can press the side plate on far enough for the clip to land in it's groove. I don't think the dealers press fit tool would even work since I had it on far enough that the side plate was making contact with the bushings and the grooves were nowhere near showing to insert the clip. So I ended up using the standard rivet link anyway, just a tip but using an old side plate from my junk chain, I drilled out the two pin holes on it and placed it over the side plate of the new master link and using a LARGE C clamp over the whole link I managed to get it pressed on all the way. Then, while having someone hold a small anvil behind the master link, I used a center punch in the ends of the rivet link and smacked it a few times (the exposed rivet link ends are softer metal than the pins themselves so they spread outwards pretty easily). Just a note about this specific chain, it appears to be much beefier than the OEM chain, the side plates are thicker, the bushings are thicker, it is plated and has the superior X-ring seals. It comes with a guarantee for 20,000 miles but it's not uncommon for them to go as far as 30,000 if properly maintained. It's also much less prone to stretch over time compared to the stock chain. Price was $115.00.

and where did you purchase it. I just ordered a DID 525VM2 Gold from Dennis Kirk for $145 with no shipping and they had it in stock.

Hi Too Tall. Well I don't often buy stuff from my local Honda dealer but I paid about as much for it there as I would have over the net. By the way I notice you own one of my all time favorite rides, I loved both of my KLRs an A13 and A15 and am seriously thinking of getting another. The new green color on that bike looks fantastic!
