After 25 years of riding my R80ST I am looking at first major overhauls and think it is time for another bike given the advantages of newer bikes (better brakes and not 25 year old components, ect), and the fact I don't want to be without a ride for a few months. But I plan the Strom woudl be main ride and may sell the ST. I am settling in on VSTOM for light weigh handling and touring capability and have browsed around web like crazy because shops that I called do not even want to test ride (times have changed) or maybe just a couple of miles when the machines come in if I sign the purchase….. I have two concerns to overcome.

Height - Will 30-inch inseam work with both models? (I sat on Wee at dealer and it is at the limit of what I like to swing my leg over or at stops). Riding 2-up with the Wee? In many ways the Wee sounds like a better machine as I would want the more nimble feel but does it have enough torque?

2-up Torque - My wife rides pillion about 85% of time and we both together are about 380 lbs (gained way too much weigh over the years). I live in the mountains and am toying with idea of going cross-country again. Many posts on web indicate that Wee may not have enough grunt for touring with this load especially in mountains. I may not be able to test ride adequately, so I would be interested to hear from folks that have ridden in similar conditions and whether they had enough power with Wee. From most chatter that appears to be only drawback to the Wee.

Height - I swore if I bought another bike that it would be lower than my ST because I just don't swing my leg over that good anymore. My R80ST feels lower than the DLWee stepped seat and standing a bit higher on the balls of feet (spec is only 0.4 inches lower). I read about the lowering kits but would not go beyond 3/4" to match what is available at the forks and also because I am not sure if I should be concerned about ground clearance with 2-up riding the corners hard. I also read that if one puts the Wee seat on the 1000 you have the same saddle height. Is this true?

I’d be interested to hear from folks that have ridden Wee hard in corners and in the hills with my touring load and lowering plans. I really like the reviews of that Wee and it did feel pretty light I the showroom. Can’t wait to find a test ride but I may not get to simulate high speeds under loaded conditions.

You are comparing a BMW that has around 48 hp and 404 lbs weight with the Suzuki at 68 hp and 418 lbs weight. When combined with the more efficient fuel management of the Suzuki and the better brakes I think that I know which bike I would rather ride two up between them.

As far as the height is concerned don't forget suspension sag. After a month or two of riding the bike will sag around 1" so don't jump into any lowering options until you have rideen for a while if that is the way you are thinking.

I occasionally go camping with other riders, some of whom have sports bikes.
My bike is usually the designated "beer tanker" and I've had no trouble hanging with a Ducati with my camping gear and a slab (24 can carton) of beer on the back.

2-up Vstrom- R80 not the decision

Yep K1W1, based on reading alone I agree it defintiely has more HP (somewhat less torque) and have decided to go VSROM proably in any event if I like a test ride becasue of what I have read about them and the R80 is older tech ect. The R80 is just a reference point for me. I was just looking for some feedback prior or even after a test ride on a Wee becasue I will not be able to simulate 380 lbs of passenger and gear on mountain roads with what the dealer will offer for the test conditions. I'd expect the Wee might give improvement and if it feels noticeably strong enough and others are plenty pleased with a Wee under the same heavy 2-up then I'll feel better about buying it. If it feels marginal to me and has disappointed others with my load situation I will proably set sight on Vee. I was reseraching some other other make light torquey touring machines but the VSTROMS have comparativley low saddle and seem like very good bikes from web feedback.

Good point about the sag and if a Wee seat is lower on the Vee that opens up the decision a bit for me. In addtion I really like the preload adjuster which should make it easy to crank down to mount and then preload it up after seated - not available with the adjustment wrench I have to deal with now.

I'm looking forward to seeing if one of the 4 dealers in my area will let me ride this weekend. CAn't wait.

I have done 2-up a few times with a total weight over 400lb (mostly me) and had 0 problem. Had plenty of power. If your doing a LOT of 2 up on the slab, consider getting the 1K. Its got a bit more grunt and has better gearing for highway speeds.

Also, consider this. The wee WILL do 2 up just fine. But if your going cross country, and plan on loading up big panners and a big trunk with lots of gear, thats a LOT of added weight and drag, and may be too much for the wee. Thats 1K territory.
