I am about 7,000km into a round-the-world trip on my K7 Wee and have been advised that, when the time comes, I should replace the stock air filter with a foam washable one which can be re-oiled.

Can anybody please advise which filter would be most suitable.

It's easy to clean and reuse the original filter.

As Newfoundlander pointed out, the clean side of the box containing the air filter is immaculate, therefore the air filter does a wonderful job of removing visible material from the air.

I replaced my original air filter after 11000 miles, installing a new Suzuki filter.

The original filter contained the bodies of a lot of dead hornets. Most of the license plates on those hornets said "British Columbia" :rolleyes:.

I figured that I could clean that filter, so I did, and then I set it aside. At 24000 miles, I took out the next load of hornets (why are those thangs so dumb?) which mainly had Florida plates (hey, maybe that's why ... nah!).

Anyway, I did reinstall the original filter after very carefully vacuuming it, brushing it, and inspecting it under strong light. In a year, we will see if my parsimony saved me $40 or cost me an expensive repair.

Actually, I think that the original filter, after 400 miles, was dirtier than the cleaned filter was upon reinsertion. I do not expect to buy another filter, because those things are really sturdy.

Thanks for that. I had looked at the K&N filter but was told by a bike mechanic with a lot of experience that I should try to avoid using a 'sports' filter if I would be travelling in dusty conditions, as I will be.

Well so far in my travels it's been completely fine, my bike is completely filthy, and recently I had the bike stripped when installing my fuse box, & checked the air box & as I said it's clean as a whistle. I usually try get onto the dirt roads every weekend, I've had it installed now for a few months, all good for me.

K&N

K&N filters made their name running the Baja 1000, through the choking silty dry dusty lakes of Baja. My feeling is that most negativity regarding K&N is based on misunderstanding and supposition, not actual experience and practice with the filters. I use K&N BECAUSE of the dust and filtering abilities. I asked another mechanic once about his opinion of K&N and he said he wouldn't trust a paper filter - (K&N is oiled gauze). It's fairly easy to clean and re-install, and should last the life of your bike. that said, there's nothing wrong with the stock filter either, for most applications.

K&N rocks! I have used them on every car I have owned since 1979 and on two of the four bikes I have owned. All did very well indeed. I have also made my own air filters for bikes for which there was no K&N available. With the Weestrom, that is no problem. K&N makes one for it and for the difference in cost between stock and K&N, it is pretty much a no brainer. Buy the K&N and know there is nothing better in the way of air filtration available factory built for your bike. They come with a 1,000,000 mile guarantee that should mean that it will outlast the bike by a comfortable margin. In most cases, the K&N filters will improve performance and fuel economy. Just an all-round good deal. Money well spent.

+1 on the K&N. I recommend smearing a little white lithium grease around the gasket to ensure a tight seal.

Im with the origional Poster.
I ride in Desert. Dry and sandy talc.
I want a filter that use's oiled Foam. Nothing is going to get past an oiled swiss cheese foam filter. No dirt partical can travel into, around, down, up and around the oil filled air passages, and make it into the engine.

You can also make your own if you are good with a sharp knife and scissors.

Remove the stock filter and using the sharp knife cut all the paper element out of the frame of the filter. Then, using the scissors, cut the UNI filter foam, making a piece big enough to fit the filter frame. If the UNI is not thick enough to 'fill' the frame, then cut a second piece to go on top of the first one. Open up a new tube of 3M weatherstrip adhesive and glue liberally around the edges making sure to seal the new element inside the frame thoroughly. Set the filter to one side to set up overnight. Inspect for any holes and fill with with more adhesive. Let set up until solid. Now, use some air filter oil to oil your filter and you have a brand new high performance foam air filter that will probably outlast the bike. I did that on my last two bikes and it worked out well. I would have bought K&N for those two bikes but K&N didnt make one for them.

FWIW, Pipercross makes an oiled foam filter for the V-Strom (like DrDale mentions, K&N is oiled gauze). That's what I'm probably going to go with once my current filter is done, as I frequently ride in sandy and dusty conditions.

Does anyone know of a filter precharger that you could slip over the snorkel? That would help keep dust from clogging the filter if you're riding someplace really dusty.
