Vstrom ignition lock replacement/F1 code

2208 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Rolex
I'm new on the forum, I haven't totally worked out how to use it yet, here goes

I have replaced the ignition switch on my 2012 650 strom after the original was damaged during an attempt to steal the bike.
On fitting the new switch the bike is showing F1 code apparately because of the immobilizer does not recongise the new key/switch combination.
My local Suzuki dealer informed me i'll need to replace the ECM and have that replacement programmed to the new key.

My question is, is there any other way around replacing the ECM, can the immobilizer be removed from the circuitry. Can the existing ECM be reprogrammed to the new key, any ideas?

You must be a Aussie, most of the world don't get the immobilizer.

Do you have a flashing light next to your key ? I didn't think that bike did but I have never owned one.

If you have the light Yes the key must match the ECM.

Do you still have the original key ?

A good locksmith should be able to make a copy of that key and make that key work in the new lock if it is a genuine Suzuki lock for your year bike.

PART 2

I will assume it is not a cheap Ebay lock set ? it will not have the immobilizer in it.

If it is a Ebay set most will not work without some changes to the wires even if there is no immobilizer fitted.

My brother tried to fit a Ebay switch in his 09 650, he gave up as being too hard and had his old lock repaired by a locksmith, the 09 does not have an immobilizer, the repair cost less than the Ebay lock.

There has been posts on this site that list the changes to the wires needed to get the Ebay switch working, you will need to search this site or someone may chime in with a link if you are lucky.

You need to put the bike in dealer mode (instructions on this site) and find if it is showing a code linked to the FI light.

Inside the ignition switch is a resistor for security, if that resistance is not right it will throw a code, dealer code 42. that can happen if the resistor gets dirty but I assume that is not your problem.

Get the dealer mode code and post it on here, tell us if you have the flashing light & where you got the new lock from, we will endeavor to help.

A used lock from a Aussie wreckers may be your best solution but check a locksmith can make your key work in the replacement switch

Thanks Rolex.. I'm in Hobart, Vstrom heaven down here.
I'll check out the thing you have listed.
Bought a genuine suzuki switch at great expense.
Solid red light on the immobilizer when the key is in on position.
Flashing F1 on the dash.

Thanks killa,
That information lines up with what my suzuki dealer told me. Interestig that it can be done with the ECM removed from the bike. I'll follow that up.

Looking to hit your place my next big holiday, looking into it now.

Sick of having holidays that suit the bride more than me.

Have a chat to a locksmith, getting your original key to work in the new switch may be the easy and cheap way ?

That Fixed it. Locksmith re-configured the new lock barrel to the original key, $65 fix. I'm always weary of what dealers tell me, profit can be the motivating factor.

Rolex, if you're coming to Tas. and bringing a vechile, ferry bookings can be difficult to get. Work when you're coming, because you may need to book way in advance.
We will be on the Strom.

Thanks for that.

I spoke to them yesterday about bookings on the boat, they suggested I book now and change it later if needed ??

I should know the arrival date but the departure date is another thing, I would like to be flexible but the boat trip will make that more difficult.

I guess getting stuck down there can't be a bad thing.

Did you ever try starting the bike with the old key alongside the new one ?
