It sounds like the starter clutch (fig. 2) is not not fully engaging the starter gear (fig. 1) with the flywheel. It will only get worse until the starter gear's teeth are so damaged that it won't engage the flywheel at all, as well as damaging the flywheel. The starter is rebuildable.
