I have wanted to do this for sometime, I then took the plunge and bought an arduino kit, and away I went.

over the course of a few weeks I experimented, tweaking and testing.

I have a partial working prototype just waiting on addtion modules as nothing i could find locally.

right now it have dubbed it MIC (Motorcycle Information Center)

it has:

Outside temp
Gear Postion Indicator
GPS (simulated as this is on its way)
Direction (N, S NW etc)
speedo
Long/Lat
Time (may remove if i find something that is needed/wanted more.

All of this on a nice 128x64 LCD display (and moving to possibly a color touch screen which I have on order)


The gear position indicator I have simulated with a poteniometer using the actual vstrom gear voltage readings

I have powered this on my DL650 already with no issues. once I get my GPS module I will have to test it in my car.

Very cool. I'm a software developer with some electronics/embedded background so have considered a similar project. I have the DL650AL2 "Glee" so the GPI and temperature sensors are available if still in a proprietary system.

The project I envision would get some data out of that into an iOS or Android mobile device, and maybe allow a basic 5-button controller to attach to the left handgrip. Arduino is a good board for that sort of thing but I haven't explored this much.

Have you guys thought about using a Raspberry Pi? Considerably more powerful and runs on Linux. Only requires power from usb and almost as small as an arduino for $25.

I have never done any electronics what so ever :) I think the Raspberry Pi would be more difficult to do this without being able to easily add modules (GPS, etc) I have not looked much into the Pi, but when i researched this, i felt the ardunio would be easier


I would love to get some sort of dial switch (like on the new BMW touring bike, to control the screen (change screens, etc) So one can use the whole screen for one item like compass, or somethjing alone those lines.

I know I still havea way to go, once my GPS module arrives from Canakit, the testing, and porduction will move forward. then its figuring out how to enclose this into a waterproof case for the screen, and whether to keep it al together or have the screen alone, and connected via cable to the arduino.

I have come a long way with this.. I started simple, used LEDs inplace of the screen as I did not have it

next will be figuring how to read the Gear Voltage on the bike.

Its been alot of fun and has kept me outa trouble when I can not ride the bike LOL now I also have other projects I want to build with this time, and not motorcycle related, some are aquarium related

Just added a no lock push button to my prototype and my device now has multiple display screens

So now one can have the current info screen with a lot of info, or show just the GPI and Speed.

Next will be setting itup so one can select what they want on the screens, for now i will hardcode what I want on each of the 4 screens, and cycle through with 1 button.

this took less than 5 mins to wire up and code.

I love seeing these gadget projects for the Strom. My main interest is a Gear indicator and the outside Temperature (F and C). My GPS provides the rest of the info I need. Good luck with the size and packaging. :yesnod:

By the way, have you seen BigMan73's similar project here?

I haven't seriously considered it yet. The demand has been so high that I thought to just wait a while before evaluating it. The lion's share of any of this work is in wiring in the data/control inputs, anyway.

my GPS module is sitting at the post office so now I get to try actual GPS data rather than simulated data.. wish it was open right now..

GPS module added on Friday, tweaked GPS code took until into my truck and went for a spin, amazingly accurate to my vehicle speedo, with in a micro second it shows the same speed, direction heading works, lat/long next is gear postion on bike. then case, and mounting and done. they tweak code to make it smaller as I would love to record GPS info for putting on google earth or something showing trip path and altitude.

You are welcome to look at the open source Stromputer project. Indeed, a similar concept based on an Arduino.
It is functional on the bike for some months now.

I wonder if you are planning to make your project open source.

Great, re-use is so important, in particular with open source projects. I my self re-used other components, concepts and open source projects to get things done. Nothing wrong with it, quite the opposite.

As for connecting to the GPS (Gear Position Sensor) - nothing to be nervous about it.
It is a 5V line. You just need to make sure that you use a large resistor so that you don't draw much current. really simple.
Start testing by connecting a digital voltage meter to the GPS pink line, I used a posi-tap. Takes maybe 1 minute to setup.
Then change the gears (with the key switch on, and engine cut off switch off) and see how the voltage levels change per gear.

How large of a resistor is needed? I need to find a place that has posi-taps have not seem them around calgary, crappy tire does not have those types. I know I got some or my garage door flasher I have on my motorcycle

the hunt continues. :)

I advise using a voltage divider with military spec resistors
