Hey guys,

I'm currently riding a 1997 GSE 500 and want to riding an other bike.
I've already put in 10.000 miles in 1.5 years, commuting to work mainly.

Now I would want a better bike which could take me to work, weekends trips and why not long trips in the summer.
I hesitate between an adventure bike or a cruiser, but I know a cruiser would be a "poor" commuter bike especially consid.ering filtering and lane splitting.

But my biggest issue is that I'm 5"4 with short legs (with my riding boots I can't flatfloot my gs500, even if it only lack like 1cm in the other foot).

Would I be in trouble on a tall bike like the Vee ? I don't really care about being flat footed as I just keep my right feet on the rear breake 80% of the time.

I depends what you are comfortable with. I have a 27" inch inseam, I lowered my V strom 1.125 inches in the back and .75 in the front. This allows me to get the balls of both feet on the ground. I am comfortable with that but I came from a much heaver bike. The Vstrom is easy and inexpensive to lower. The only way to be sure is sit on one and see how it feels.

I, personally, don't think I could do it. I get a little nervous at times and I have a little over 30" inseam. There are some that do it, though. Like ltljohn pointed out, there's all sorts of ways to lower the bike.

A good friend of mine is about 5'6" or so and loves his Honda CB500X. Its seat is a bit lower the V-Strom's and its COG is way down low.

Take a look at 5'2" Dani Pedrosa on his MotoGP Honda. He's halfway off the seat with just the toes on one leg down when he gets on.

If you are doing a lot of city commuting, in my opinion, most cruisers are a bit large for the task. A small adventure bike like the DL650 is probably much more suited to that job. Your height, however, is a possible issue with the v-strom. As stated earlier, the cb500x is lower and a "vertically challenged" friend of mine loves his. He also owns a Ducati and had a Road King. I know this is a V-Strom forum and I LOVE mine, but there are other bikes you may want to consider.

Here are two "cruisers" that may get it done for you:
Kawasaki Vulcan S (seat height 27.8 inches)
and
Honda ctx700 (seat height 28.3 inches)
The Honda can be had with a slick DCT transmission for easy commuting duties but is a bit down on power.
The Kawasaki has a little more giddy-up but will not be as smooth riding as the Honda.

Both of these bikes are smaller than a big cruiser and allow for more nimble riding.

There are a lot of bikes to suit all kinds of people, don't get hung up on the GLORIOUS V-Strom! PS - for mostly commuting in town the 650 is a great bike, the 1000 is a lot of bike and you have not been riding long.

I think you are looking at the wrong bike. You don't need the room of a bigger frame.

Well, to be honest I'm kinda bored of the GS500 and I know it will be hard to do long trips with it.
So if the Strom is not a good bike for my size, which one could be interesting ? The Vulcan S is pretty but I just have 3500-4000$ to spend.

I really like adventure bikes, I feel damn cursed with those short legs ahah :serious:

Not sure where you live, but a lightly used Honda VT750 can be had under 4K easily in the US. Yes you are on a cruiser, but a reliable bike that will do most of what you want. Just the opinion of a guy on the internet who does not know much about the person to whom he is making the suggestion.

Why would it be hard to do long trips on it, what have you done to make it more comfortable for you? Seats, bars, risers, luggage.......you have a lot of options to make it a great trip machine. I think you just want another bike, that or somebody is giving you crap because you ride a 500. Just sayin........ ;)

If you want a great cruiser that handles awesome and is uber reliable, take a look at the Suzuki boulevard C50.

I'd keep the 500 for commuting and buy whatever you want for touring and weekends. I commuted with my FZ1 and built up 80K miles on a too good for commuting bike. Jim in Ojai

The 750 Shadow and C50 are also two of the bike I might considerate. I like the global look, seems quite torquey too and no too expensive.

Big B, I did some trips with it, and every time my butt and knee beg me to stop for a while. I know I could upgrade it with seat, shock, bar etc but I'd really like to get informed on other bikes.

Keeping the GSE for commuting and buy a second one, I already thought about it but this could lead me into financial issue, with 2 insurance to pay, 2 maintenance, etc ..

In the 3500-4000$ mentioned above, I already added the value of the GSE if I could sell it for like 1500$ :smile2:

Oh and nobody is giving me crap because I ride a 500, and I don't feel bad about riding "only" a 500. Since I bought this I learned tons of things and I almost sure a bigger bike could have caused issue on certain occasion.
And I don't really care about top speed or very fast bike, I like twins and I prefer a good torque feeling :smile2:

i'm at 28" inseam and have no trouble with my V. no, i cannot get both feet down and to flatfoot one foot, i have to slide my ass over to the desired side.

i've been riding for several decades and the V has the highest seat, with the exception of my DR (my feet never touch the ground on that beast). the high center of gravity takes a bit of getting used to, and expect to drop once or twice at a stop. mind the angle/height of the ground where you plan to plant your foot.

get the WEE and be HAPPY.

I too am a bit of a hobbit

I knew the DL650 was a "tallish" bike at 835mm but that didn't deter me.

The modifications I did were a 30mm lowering link ($85), a bit of seat surgery by a motor trimmer ($50) and removing the rubber blocks from under the seat and replacing them with some foam tape ($0).

The result is a total seat height reduction of 65mm down to 770mm.
