Dear all

I am trying to find information on what modifications to the V-Strom 650's suspension are possible. In essence I would like to:

1. Make the front suspension softer
2. Create 50mm more of ground clearance
3. Create about 50mm more of suspension travel in the front and back, if possible

The idea with these modifications is to give the bike a suspension similar to the BMW F650 Dakar, thus resulting in more of a dual purpose bike with better off-road ability.

Anyone with advice on how these modifications can be done, with or without the help of Suzuki, would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry to say, but what you're asking is not possible, at least not at a reasonable cost. I'll go through your list:

1) Actually, the Strom's forks are too soft. The harshness you're feeling is due to the forks bottoming, not to the springs being too stiff. Better springs up front will help a lot, especially off-road.

2) Unless the suspension is radically modified (see #3) a 50mm increase isn't possible. Better fork springs and a stiffer rear shock will likely increase clearance by about 25mm

2) There is no way to increase the travel of the stock forks. You could investigate various front end swap possibilities, but that will most likely be difficult and expensive. Same story in the rear, you'll need to find a different shock that will bolt up, and/or an entire rear suspension, including swingarm, shock and linkage.

Bottom line is that the Dakar and the V-Strom are very different bikes, and trying to make one more like the other isn't going to work anywhere near as well as just buying the other would.
