Hey all,

Great forum you got here. Im a KLR owner, not looking to convert but looking to have the best of both worlds (a KLR and a strom). The strom would be my more pavement oriented bike.

Some questions. Some say the 1000 has issue and swear by the 650, some say they are both amazing. If i am looking at a highway bike, should I just go for the 1000?

The stealership near me has an 04 DL1000, 24k miles, with a tall windshield, givi top-case, handguards (no sideracks though). Asking $4999.

Seeing as its the end of the year here in MN, i could prolly get them lower.

How much would you offer up for this bike? Any concerns over it being a pre-2005 DL1000 (i have heard issues). How many miles can you get outta the 1000 engines? 100k?

In my opinion, I feel $4999 is a bit high unless it comes with nice farkles. I bought an '07 with 11,000 mi for $4500 and thought I made a good deal, but have since seen others with farkles for not much more.
I, too, have a KLR, and bought a VStrom for the same reason as you. You won't be disappointed with your decision.

Both are better than you KLR in every way except they are a little less dirt oriented than your KLR.... Both are extremely reliable bikes... I personally prefer the 650 because I find it nealy flawless in the way I need it to be....

Try using google search, since there are about 10 million threads on this very topic.

Bottom line is you have to ride them both and decide for yourself.

Lots of people have come to the V-Strom from the KLR. I think it's fair to say many of them dump the KLR for a "real" 250 dirt bike and use the V-Strom for hard and soft roads.

2007 Vee

I've put 91,000km of trouble free riding on my 2007 DL 1000. My bike is well maintained and while touring I've had only two occasions to touch it with a tool. Once to tighten an old wearing chain and once to adjust a turn signal after a tip over. I'd have to say that the bike is totally dependable and trustworthy.
I'm not an aggressive rider but no doubt I'm spoiled by extra horse power. I ofter ride 2-up and loaded with gear and yes the Vee does have way more power to accelerate than the Wee; but the same fuel economy at highway speed.
I'd recommend for your use that you get the Vee.

K, so the dealer has it for $4999 + tax, fees, etc ($800 or so extra)

It has tall windshield ($100), Givi topcase ($200) and skid plate ($200), so around $500 in extras.

I counter offered with $4500 out the door, including tax and everything. Waiting to hear from them on the phone, the need to talk it over with the manager:thumbdown:

So that saves me about $500 off the price and about $800 in tax and fee, plus get the extras (and these are extras I would want to do anyway)

Thoughts?

The issues with the Vee are well known and written about hear. Basically almost all Vees have 2 issues.

1) The fuel mapping is lean and the Vee runs crappy off idle to around 3000 rpm. This is fixed with a power commander or a remap of the ECU by a dealer. I did this (re map) and mine runs correct now and uses around 36 mpg combined mileage.

2) The clutch is noisy on the Vee under certain conditions. There are fixes. I have not bothered with it. So far, I have not heard of any clutch failures.

My bike has 60,000 miles and runs great. Burns a qt of good oil every 5,000 miles. I have replaced the fuel filter once myself, which was an expensive part...but there are cheaper ways to do this, I elected to use OEM parts. The bike also barfed a water pump seal and clutch slave cylinder seal, both cheap and both owner fixable.

The wee is also a great bike and from what I hear does not have niether the clutch nor mapping issue. But, there is no way to make a wee run like a Vee if horsepower means anything to you. And on a bike like this, I must admit HP is low on my list....but it is still on my list.

I think what you offered is more than a fair price - - I woulda started at $4k and top out at $4.5k. I think for that price you get a fair deal - don't have to tell you about dealer vs private selling prices, since you've already decided it's not that big a factor. When I bought my Strom, there were hardly any on the used market, and none in Michigan. When one came across my radar at the near-local Harley dealership's 'Spring used bike blowout sale'< I gave the Wee they were selling a test ride, and that was all it took. Paying a premium was worth it, since I could get a nice clean bike 'now', and not have to wait for the classifieds to get me lucky.

Yea, i think i will stick at 4500 and not a peny more. Im not in a rush, and there are some good looking 650s that are newer and much less miles for around that range.

Well, pulled the trigger. Got an 06 650 with 8k miles on it. Now proud owner of a V-strom and KLR!

Ditto. Sounds like the same type of purchase I made. 2007 Dl650 for $4300 and it came with tank bag, racks and a top trunk. I also have a KLR in the garage for more off-road excursions and love the DL650 for it's durability, reliability and mpg.

I think you will be fine with whatever Strom you decide on, both are excellent bikes. For myself, I just don't need the extra power of the larger bike. I would think it would also make a difference if you plan on hauling a lot of gear a long way.

Good luck in whatever your final decision is.
