Hi, I've been looking at the Vstrom 1000 with great interest the last few months. I'm 42, currently ride a Yamaha FZ8 90rwhp/50ft/lb naked bike. I live in Southern Oregon and love hitting the mountain road twisties. I would love to start touring more, which I will do on my 8, but am looking for something that really is multi use for my next purchase. I would still want a bike that excels in the twisties/corners, can keep higher freeway mph (80-90mph) without excessive buzziness, and that I can load up with gear. Looks the 1000 fits the bill. Just curious what people that have owned sport bikes feel about the 1000's prowess in the corners? I'm not looking for a track bike but would definitely still want something I could hang a bit of cheek off, and get fiesty with in corners. Also, I live in an area with a ton of fire roads. I'd really like to get into back road exploring as well, kind of mixing the two together on extended rides. Most of these roads are in pretty good shape. How do you feel the 1000 handles in dirt at low/moderate speeds? My dirt experience is nil on a bike, grew up riding 3 wheelers...apples and oranges. Any and all information is appreciated. The big difference in handling vs the sport bikes is the 19" front wheel. Which seems heavy and slow compared to a 17" front wheel. But, you get used to it. The ground clearance is good on a Vee, adventure touring bikes are tall and built for a bit more clearance than sportier bikes, so leaning in turns won't be met with sparks flying too soon. The new DL 1000 is fairly light and has a nice powerband that will make it deceptively fast in tight stuff. It might be hard to find a better multi-purpose bike.

If you have no experience on dirt or gravel, you will crap your pants the first time you try it! Less the bike at fault, more the tires. Only an aggressive tread pattern tire will lend much confidence off road. But, you can learn to handle the bike by relaxing and guiding it rather than forcing it. As long as it is dry they will go about anywhere.

Eg, the '02 to '12 1000 is a completely different bike from the '14+ 1000. The '14+ DL1000A is a great ride for just what you describe. Look up some reviews in the motorcycle magazines from the U.S. And the U.K.

The old 1000 was not a very good package. Strong reliable engine, fuel mapping problems, clutch, alternator problems, budget brakes & suspension, and I don't think the chassis was as well matched to the engine as the new one is.

Blasphemy!! You can find em cheap. Throw on a fuel commander, Werks basket, and spring upgrade and your in business. Takes an lickin and keeps on ....... :wink2:
