So I would like to upgrade the front brakes on my 2003 Vstrom 1000.

Where would you start? Not wanting to do stoppies (would be OK if I could), just want improved brakes that have better feel and don't feel like I have to use all of the lever to achieve quicker deceleration? .

So would you - install...... Stainless brakes lines?, install GSXRer calipers using adapter plates?, aftermarket rotors and pads? Or something else?

How about rear brakes?

There are several 4-pot install discussions on this site, check it out. I just got a set of gixxer tokicos off eBay, AdventureTech brackets, ceramic pads on Wee2 with stock brake lines and can't be happier. More power, yes but also no delay between squeezing brake lever and brake coming on.

For you it would make sense to replace lines just because they are so old but it didn't for me on 3mo old bike. The forces alot less after conversion, I don't need to squeeze lever as hard.

I've owned three V-Stroms and put EBC HH pads on two of them (the third had a Nissin 4-Piston upgrade by PO). In my opinion, just switching from factory pads to the EBC HH made a huge improvement. With the stock pads, I could "coast" at 40 MPH and practically stand on the rear brake with no effect. With the HH pads, I could lock the rear if I really tried, but they were easy enough to modulate that it was never a concern.

I never tried the braided stainless steel brake lines, but I've heard those also make an improvement in combination with the HH pads. You can always add these later.

The V-Strom with the Nissin 4-Piston upgrade stopped well, but I never thought "Wow, this is better than the HH." Of course, I'm not a track day rider, just an old retiree who does venture "slightly" above the posted speed limit when it's safe.

My humble advice - try the HH pads and go from there.

For free (almost)

Pop the pivot pin out of the hand brake lever and give it a little grease. Also, if you haven't done it for a while, run some fresh brake fluid through the front brake circuit, and make sure you get all the air out. Might find that those two 'fixes' will make a difference as well, at little cost. Might also pop out the front brake pads, 'deglaze' them with some fine sandpaper (trying not to breathe the dust, of course) then take a medium scotchbrite pad and some brake cleaner to the disks. Won't be night and day, but will probably help a little (and give you a dry run on putting in the HH pads).

Yeah the upgraded calipers will giver you better brake 'feel', but probably won't shorten your actual braking distance much. The stainless lines may help a little too.

I swap back and forth between my K2 and a 1980's BMW. First time back on the Vee, I gotta be careful not to lock up the front brake. I suspect your perception of front brake effectiveness depends on what you're comparing it to.

I have had HH pads on three V Stroms also. I went to the Tokico 4 piston calipers on the 2012 DL 650. There is literally a night vs day difference. If you don't feel that, there has to be something wrong with the installation. I wouldn't waste money on upgrading to HH pads ( except for the rear ) after having the 4 piston setup. I get off my 2014 BMW RT and then get on the V Strom....and no longer feel like I need to drag my feet to slow down.

Move your levers/perches inboard. I do this with my work dirt bike and just did it to my Wee. Just loosen the clamps on the lever perches (I did brake and clutch) and slide them in. I now have about an inch gap between my throttle housing and my brake perch, maybe not quite an inch on the clutch perch/signal headlight switch housing. Just be careful with the clutch lever so it doesn't activate high beams.

Costs nothing and moves your fingers away from the lever pivot point, giving a significant mechanical advantage. I only use two fingers for clutch and brake, so I've got plenty of room once the levers were moved.

Second that! I waited a long time to do the conversion. Should have done it a long time ago, that much better. I had HH pads before, still a lot better!
