You're possibly the wrong group to ask, given your affinity for dirt roads and my almost total avoidance of them these days, but I'd like your thoughts on a couple of tyres seeing my low mileage, but six years old Anakee 2s need replacing. (They're turning blue!)

I've always run Michelin Anakees and the 3s are a good prospect but I'm looking now for something more at home on the bitumen. Do I stick with Michelin and go Pilot Road 4 Trail or as the tyre shop guy suggested, consider switching to the Metzeler Tourance Next? Pretty much the same price $475 Pilots and $460 Nexts.

Anyone tried either? Or do I need to go visit the sports tourer crowd? Thanks all.

Hi Don

My father rides a 2012 dl 650 and has just put on the Pilot road trails and is really happy with them .
no more off-road for him ( he's just turned 78) ,anyway I rode his bike the other day and they seem really smooth , corner easily and time will tell on longevity.
I've so far got 14,000 on Anakee 3s on my strom with a lot life remaining a good tyre as well .
By the way I'm sure he got his pilot roads fitted for $420 at one of those bike shops at Brendale , so worth ringing around.

Try the Pilots

I have had 3 sets of Tourance, the first set was way back in 2007 or there abouts I think it was. I found them to be a good all round tyre tho a little over-rated on dirt. Well a lot over- rated on dirt but a good tyre just the same.
Time moves on and from reading the good write ups in properly conducted tyre shoot outs, I'd certainly go for the Pilots.

I know conti trail attack is not strictly a road tyre, but its performance well surpass my riding ability and style dry or wet, and performance is better than all other tyres I used on Strom's. I get roughly double the milage out of them compare to anakee 2, TW, Scorpion. That's about 18,000+ km for my conti and roughly 10 to 12k for other brands. I know everyone's riding style is different and therefore mileage- that's why I include others for comparison.

Expect to pay $ 440 (Aussie bikers) to $475, (tyres for bikes, Albion)....

Thanks everyone for your input.

After researching all the tyres mentioned, and in the absence of obtaining any information pointing overwhelmingly in favour of one particular brand over another, I settled on the Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail (what a mouthful!) and had a set fitted today by the guys at Two Wheel Tyres at Blacksoil, just near the Fernvale turnoff from the Toowoomba road.

To run them in I took a short ride up to Esk and grabbed lunch at Enigmas cafe, site of many a hearty breakfast during the Esk gathering. Coming back past Wivenhoe Dam I resisted the urge to peel off and go home via Mt Glorious. The combination of those lovely curves and brand new tyres still coated with release agent could have been my undoing. By the time I got home I'd done 150 klms including some zigzagging so that's enough of a break in period I reckon.

Interestingly, while the rear wheel was off I noticed the chain seemed to be crimping a bit. The tyre man said he was going to mention to me that he felt it was nipping up in a few places too. Strange, it's only done 18K fairly gentle all bitumen klms, it's checked for tension every oil change every 5K klms, it gets a regular supply of oil from the Scottoiler, and the sprockets which were replaced at the same time as the chain show only marginal wear. :confused: I'm not happy with the chain now so I'll replace it but I can't see the need to replace the sprockets, apart from the fact that it's accepted practice to do both at the same time. Before KIWI jumps in and tells me not to be a Scrooge, yes, I will do both, but now comes more research on what chain to buy. This current chain I'm running now was/is an OEM Suzuki one in the recommended size. Any thoughts on chains -- size, brand, expected life?

I have a 2005 DL650 with a Michelin Pilot Activ up front & Dunlop SportMax 180 in rear. Handles great on road. Both tires are very predictable in corners and under braking. Haven't ridden the Wee off-road yet so I cannot comment that.

I think the time to check for chain kinks is when you turn the rear wheel slowly when its off the ground. I wouldn't judge the look of a chain not relatively stretched on the rear sprocket.
