A friend of mine was on a ride from Williams lake, BC to New Mexico on his Wee Strom, with 2 friends (KLR and Vulcan 1600) when a kid turned left in front of him. I don't have a lot of details but he is in hospital there with a broken femur. I think it happened on Sunday. Be careful out there!

Hope your buddy recovers o.k. and doesn't give up riding in the process. On another note, I don't know how old the kid was but from reading a few crash reports around here kids (16+) are responsible for a large portion of car/bike collisions. IMO, they don't stress looking out for motorcyclists enough in driver's education.

Thanks Dan/BC. His wife flew down and is with him now. I leave on my trip in a week - hopefully he'll be home by then. I am going to call the hospital tomorrow to check on things. I doubt if he will give it up - his wife may have other ideas!

I talked to him this morning. He is in a trauma centre in Porland. His wife is not there yet, and all his gear is with the bike - just has his wallet and passport. The others sent all his stuff home UPS. The vulcan was ahead by 15 minutes and the KLR was following - they are both OK, a little bummed at the way things turned out. The car turned right in front of him, no time to even begin to brake. He sounds in good spirits. Thanks for all the good wishes!

A tiny silver lining in his huge dark cloud is that his BC (horrible, socialist, I-don't-want-anything-like-gubm'nt-insurance) medical plan will pay his medical bills and I'm assuming medical repatriation costs.

Glad to hear he's in good spirits. Gotta look at the bright side of things when this happens, which is that he's alive to talk about it. Bike can be replaced... person can't.

Hope he's back in the saddle again soon.

PT Rider - BC medical won't even scratch the surface of the cost of care in the states. Fortunately, he has out of country medical insurance with a private carrier (paid for by him, not the taxpayers).

Yak that is a good point. A lot of Canadians I deal with in business no't realize the costs for medical care in the states. Always a good idea to get a USA travel policy .
