So heres my deal. Currently I have an 02 cbr600f4i. Over the next year my commute will be growing substantially. I also plan on taking a couple decently long trips; one down through the ozarks, and another up to Canada.

I can usually ride the cbr for 3 hours at a time before I have to get off and take a break. I love the power of the inline-four engine and light weight, but dislike the lack of space to carry luggage, and the semi hard seat.

I am considering buying a dl650 for the following reasons:

-hopefully around 10mpg better than the cbr
-comfortability on extended rides
-more room for luggage
-and I can offroad a little if I have to....


What is your advice? Will I be disappointed with the lack of power in the dl650?....do I keep the cbr or trade for a vstrom?

I plan to test ride one as soon as the 6 inches of snow melts off the roads here in KC.

You won't be disappointed

The DL650 makes nice usable power and the upright seating possition and smooth engine makes it a great long distance mount. One of my friends had a CBR600 and I put many miles on it. If you can put 3 hours on it at a time you should be able to ride the Strom all day.

cbr600 is one of the bikes I had a test ride on before deciding on the DL650.
Riding posture topped the list. Also, it helped me realize I'm not into the screamin' revs of the inlines.

On the other hand, the wee is find on any hard-pack surface, but has a heavy nose that doesn't like soft stuff.

IMO "adventure bike" aptly describes the wee. As a dual-sport, it's maybe 70% road bike, 20% off road. Not 100%? Nope, but I love it for what it is and don't dwell on what it isn't.

I'm sure that being 50 yrs young has no bearing at all on my perspective.

Many here have a DL650 so the opinion will be a little biased.
It'll depend on how much power to think you need, only you can decide that.
As far as keeping the Vstrom, again if the power is sufficient for you you may not ride the CBR much if ever again.
I rode an FJR and FZ6 just before I bought my Wee. Both have more power of which I would "like" to have some of it in my Wee but I certainly don't need it. Every bike is somewhat of a trade-off in some respect.

Best is to ride one and decide for yourself. It's a fantastic bike.

ahh, I am 20, its all good.....

hopefully I get to test ride one tomorrow, its supposed to get above 30 degrees for the first time in about a week.

go for it. i got both for 2 more months the 650 will be great but if you miss the power get the 1000. i am sell the 650 to a friend . its a fast 650 . but the 1000 does not work as hard. passing gear 650 4th passing gear 1000 3rd with huge mid range speed an power. you cant lose with either one both great bikes. by the way these are not off road bikes. hard packed roads. i started to take my 650 off road until i hit couple inches of soft sand .not an off road bike. but you could try a off road tire. will be keeping the 1000 better for 2 up . hey put a stereo on it.

You may be too young to appreciate it!:) (How's that for ageism?)

I wish they'd had bikes this good when I was 20. Other than power, there are few areas where the bike can be criticized. As you may have read here, there's no clear consensus on whether the Wee or the Vee is the better bike, meaning they're both pretty darn good.

cbr600f4i vs dl650

I'm 6'3" and own a 08 DL1000, but ride my dads Honda cb750 nighthawhk every time I visit him. I realize that I don't have the bike that you are looking at, but since the real difference between the DL1k and the Wee is the power I think what I have to say is pertinent. Your cbr can take off at dizzying speeds because of the inline 4. The Strom is fast but doesn't exactly go like a bike that was built for racing. It vibrates a little more because of the V twin engine. There is a lot more play in the suspension when you brake, and isn't quite as nimble in the corners as your sport bike.

All that being said, if you want a comfortable ride that can get you where you need to be (even if where you need to be is down a dirt road), this is your bike. There are a ton of luggage options. On the wee you can use the space where the 2nd Tail pipe would be for a tool tube. you can easily add knobbby tires, and go just about anywhere. There are crash bars available that can add far more protection to the bike than frame sliders could ever give. the suspension adds several inches of clearance that your cbr lacks. I don't think twice about riding off a sidewalk in front of a storefront. Oh yeah and they hold their value.

For a sportier look I added the AXIO hard tailbag (see my post with pics here http://stromtrooper.com/showthread.php?t=36409) . Now my bike looks like a sportbike. When I park next to one though, my bike is four inches taller and I store stuff in the tail. The AXIO doubles as a passenger backrest.

In summary, the Strom doesn't get up and go like a sport bike. It doesn't stop or corner like a sport bike. It does jump off curbs, and go down dirt roads. It packs all of your camping gear and two weeks worth of clothes and takes you to Canada, or Alaska or wherever you want to be. It resells four years later for 1/2 or more of its value (as you have probably noticed from shopping for one), and it looks down at other bikes with a grimace and thinks if you had seen the things I have seen you would wish you were me.

If you want more power after your test ride get the 1000, but read the 1000 specific forum for maintenance items first. That way you know what you are getting into. It's no big deal. Most of the issues are one time adjustments from really picky people who want their bike perfect. So some minor maintenance must be performed to get the bike that way. None of the Wee strom owners seem to complain about anything (except the DL1k owners), but they don't have a 996cc engine either.

Now that I have talked smack about everyone by giving you unbiased opinion, I am sure that I won't hear the end of it.

Bottom line, I have owned three bikes, and the DL1k is by far my favorite for comfort and functionality. Oh yeah, and I never get tired of hearing sport bike owners say, "Wow, that is a really big bike!"

Hopefully by now you have your new bike. I liked mine when I first got it, but didn't like the squishy front suspension. I replaced the fork springs and wouldn't go back. Gel seat helped me a lot too. I have said several times in this forum that the stock 650 seat is a torture device.
