Hi folks:

I have smacked the bottom of my bike on so many things its ridiculous. After paying $10 to get my center stand fixed (I had bent bolts and had to re-tap the hole for the bolt) because I had smacked it so bad; I would like more ground clearance.

I'm 6'6" and can easily flat foot the bike now. I also have the SW-motech centerstand which I know I'd have to take to a welder to be able to lift the rear wheel up. And I'm OK with that. Also have a Hyperpro Progressive rear spring if that matters.

I'm considering: 5/8" risers, 1" risers, and 1.5" risers. Seems like the only place to buy this is: Burkhartcycle.

In any case, I'm curious:
1) Which of these risers would you recommend given that I'm going to face a lot tougher roads in South America (especially Bolivia, and Chile)?
2) Looks like the material is 7075 aluminum. Would you have any concerns slapping aluminum versus steel raising links on the bike?

Seriously ... with all due respect to the DL, guys like you who Ride The World deserve a more purpose-built, true dual-sport.

Meh. I think it depends on the type of trip you do. I'd estimate 99% of riders who do this trip do at most 20% dirt; and 80% pavement. That's how I rationalized the V-strom being the right bike for this trip. I'd like something that excels for the 80% of riding I'm doing.

That being said; I'd certainly love something about 150 pounds lighter; and fabric bags etc... but there are trade offs. I love parking my bike and knowing everything is locked up in aluminum panniers. I'm really happy with the V-strom as a choice for this trpi.

Ride on! The only reason people knock you for what you're doing and what you're doing it on, is most likely because they are damn jealous you're doing it and not them. :yesnod:

Btw, your snowboard is still safe and sound. :mrgreen:

If it was me I would get Soupy's adjustable raising links. :thumbup:

Especially since you are not sure how tall you want to go. I'm only 5'10" with a 32" inseam and I am thinking of going higher. I can barely/almost flat-foot it now and it has been a pain on uneven terrain, but even 1/2-5/8" would make a huge difference. With Soupy's, you don't have to remove anything to adjust and you have infinite adjustability to optimize the lift.

I need to upgrade my rear spring/shock too, but that costs a lot! I've already put more into this thing than I paid for it...

EDIT: Oh, and you don't need to cut up the center or side stands right away...just through a plank under it until you figure out how high you need it.

Great suggestion. Do you have any idea what the material is? Stainless steel or aluminum?

I'd also love suggestions if you think this would hold up on this trip. I'm pretty rough on the V-strom and i've tried to drop it in at least every country I've been to; although I did miss El Salvador (already have Costa Rica covered).

I have a set of Soupy's on my Strom. They are made of steel and are quite robust probably more so than the stockers.Installation is fairly easy and adjustment is a breeze. Make sure to lube the bearings no matter what link you install.
By the way how is the melting fuse thing going?

I have Soupy's links on my Vee, would never travel south of Rio Grande
on it. Prefer KLR 650 for Mexico, met plenty of Topes there, if you
strap your Givis down real good you can stand up on pegs & keep
speed up.
