Tire Recommendation? Yes, i searched.

Good evening from East TN. 2020 1050 XT. Don't need new tires yet, but studying. Factory tires still on bike, with under 3000 miles. Leaning toward Shinko 705, which I've used on Super Tenere and loved. I do ONLY blacktop, so don't need off road capabilities. Want high mileage. Have used Heidenau K60 Scouts on Super Tenere before, and I'm OK with them. Any information or thoughts on Shinko Raven rear 160/60 - 17 or Shinko 777 same size, regarding expected mileage? I will continue searching, but appreciate any input from folks on forum. Michelin PR4? Yes, I know I'm all over the map. Thanks.

if you only do blacktop why are you not using an onroad only tire like the Pilot Road 4?

Pilot Road 4 is not available in a 19" front so it's a no go for the DL. Great tire and I run them on a set of RT wheels (I120/70-17 and 180/55/17) have for my GS. They stick like glue and are an amazing rain tire with good longevity.

Shinko's are great tires and have some attractive pricing, but they wear faster than others so the cost saving may be false economy. Want you save in initial tire purchase you end up spending on having the tires changed more frequently. If you do you own tire changes, it's not a big deal.

I have run a lot of Shinko. 712's, 777's, 244's and 705's on various bikes the only time i use them now is if I am selling a bike and it needs tires. I will say if I get another DR650 I'd still use the 244's.

Last year I bit the bullet and bought a pair of Michelin Trail 5's and even thought there were significantly more than a set of 705's they are in every way a better tire. I have about 3500 miles on them, and they look like new. I just did a1465 miles of high-speed slab and the rear tire is still rounded and looks great showing no wear. If this was a Shinko 705 rear it would be about 2/3rds through its life span. If the Michelins continue to wear at the same rate, they are now I'll get at least double the mileage of the Shinko 705's all while having better performance and handling,

YMMV,

Yes they are... but it looks like the road 6 is now out so that's probably an even better choice
I have been using Road 5 Trails on my Strom from the getgo. Brilliant tyres. I will eventually go to Road 6's when I have to. However if You are seeking high mileage then they will not be suitable. Their forte is excellent grip wet and dry, so accordingly high mileage is not their strong point. .

Where have you found the PR4's for a 19" wheel? I'd certainly be interested in trying them on my bike.
I put road 6’s on this year, and would highly recommend them for asphalt only riding. Available in the 19” front, sticky, smooth, and amazing in the rain - my wife has the 6’s on her FJ09 as well, and in riding through day long downpours we’ve both never had the confidence that the 6’s give us.
Negatives for me are cost (not cheap) and we both get a whirring noise at high speed from the tire (~120-140km/h+ so that is maybe 70 or 80 mph). Only noticeable on certain pavement surfaces we think it is due to the siping pattern. Not really noticeable as a rider much, but if we go close to each other the other rider/bike can hear it. But smooth and no I’ll handling, just noisy!
I’m curious what the stock tires are on your bike, I have a ‘21 DL650A XT and they come with Bridgestone Battlax A40s. I’m currently sitting at 7.5k miles and it looks like 50% left on the rear and maybe 20% left on the front, which is weird, I’ve never seen a front tire wear faster than the rear. I’m looking at the Michelin Road 6s as a replacement due to some claims they’ll get 20k miles, currently researching as well, as I do 98% on pavement. I had Shinko 705s on my previous bike, a ‘21 Honda NC750X, but only got about 6k miles out of them. I like the aggressive tread design and how inexpensive they were, but definitely not what I was looking for in terms of mileage since I can do that kind of mileage in 1-2 months. Right now I’ve narrowed it down to either the Road 6s or sticking with the stock tires but newer version, looking at about $385 for the Battlax A41s or ~ $500 for the Road 6s.

This issue was touched on recently on another thread. See .......

His findings have coincided with my own. I dumped OEM Dunlops off my CRF1000L after 3000Kms for my own safety. They almost had me off for no good reason in the wet on three occasions. I had similar experiences with metzeler Z8's on a former NC700X. Then my Strom was forever showing the TC light on the OEM Bridgestones. That stopped completely when I changed to aftermarket Michelins. All the above tyres are good as aftermarket items but not when they have been constructed to Motorcycle manufacturers specifications.

PS. My X-Adv had the front OEM Bridgestone worn out prior to the rear.

My tires are Bridgestone BattleAx Adventure. I bought bike slightly used with 1980 miles. I assume these were the factory tires. They look nearly new to me still, but bike only has 2500 miles or so.

You mentioned longevity as a requirement. In my years of running Shinko 705's on two KLR's, I don't believe you will get that long-life on a big V.

Great tire, nice and sticky, but I wore through them, especially the rear.

Good luck.

FWIW, I'm running Metzler Tourance Next right now and am pleased.

The front probably did not start with as much tread depth as the rear. My Dunlop Trailmax Missions are 14/32 rear, 10/32 front brand new. They both had about 3/32; the rear more- the front more+ when I replaced them both with new DTMM's.

harder to find now that they are 2 generations old

Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2's would also be worthy of consideration.

Howdy everyone from East TN. I appreciate all the valuable input on tires. Have not made decision yet, and thankfully my stock tires only have 2950+ miles after today's ride. So I still have some time before I make my purchase. But at least now I am prepared. Thanks, all.

Eric
I am cheap but happy with my shinkos
Thank you.

Eric
So I would have the tire on hand when I need it, I just ordered Michelin PR4 150/70-17 from Sportbike Track Gear in Michigan. FYI for anyone wondering my decision. Thanks to all who weighed in with opinions on high mileage street tire for my 2020 1050 XT. I appreciate.

If you get a lot of rain in your area there shouldn’t be any reason not to go with the 5s or 6s since they offer another level of rain traction, unless the price difference is that significant. Any case double check the manufacture date stamped on your new set, wouldn’t be surprised to see someone try to pull a fast one on a tire I don’t think they even make anymore, since the edition of the newer versions. Let us know how they are once you have them installed 👊
