I'm in the market for a tire changer since the shops around here want to charge $100 or more to change a set of tires. I really like the No-Mar classic, but it's a bit spendy. I found this one on a site not to be mentioned:

I believe it is a clone of the old HF ones. They want $200 shipped. Does any one have any experience with this?

Looking for one myself. What sight is it on.
I‘ll buy it and try it
eBay. I'll probably get one also. I'm a little concerned because the same seller has the same thing listed for $999 also.

Clamping the rim at the edges like that is a royal pain in the ass, especially if your rims are different diameters as on a V-Strom.

I've used a friend's No-Mar, and tire irons are a lot faster than futzing endlessly with those damn rim clamps. Once you finally get the wheel clamped, everything from there does indeed work pretty nice.


However, the rim clamps and mount bar on that fleaBay widget do not seem to have any plastic covering to protect the finish on your wheels, and none is mentioned in the copy. Powder coating is not sufficient.

You'll also note that the rim clamps do not have any sort of lip to hold the edge of the wheel, so they're likely even more useless than the rim clamps on a No-Mar. (And that's pretty useless...)

I would not buy this particular tire changer.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I want to get something so I don't have to bug you again when I need new ones put on. The dealership on W. Washington wanted $500 bucks for new Metzlers and install. They wanted $150 to install them if I bought them somewhere else!! The Ducati dealership was a little better at $400 for the tires and install.

I went through the same decision a couple months ago when I noticed my tires, rear especially, were at their wear bars. After pondering the cheaper options, I went ahead and just manually changed them. Most difficult was breaking the bead but a couple 2x4's under the edge of my car and I was able to conquer that. I researched and found a great YouTube video where he used "Zip" ties to bull the new tires beads together and with Pledge, yes Pledge spray wax, I was easily able to mount the new tire. Oh yeah, look for the rotation arrows first.....it was even easier to mount the rear the second time.

If that's ride in ride out, the price at the Ducati dealer ain't that bad -- that seems like about $40-$50 per tire, which makes sense. If that's the price with you doing the work of removing the wheels, that's silly.

There's an opportunity just waiting for someone around Indy to offer a tire changing service at a reasonable cost. No one around here seems to understand that people nowadays have the interwebs. People now know how much they're getting screwed on tires and mounting, and for some odd reason they don't usually like it...

You're welcome to use my tools and facilities sometime. I promise I'll just watch if you really want the full learning experience... :mrgreen:

bwringer, I went to the site you gave about changing tires. What size car wheel did you use to fit both sizes of our wheels? Thanks, Dave

A buddy of mine with a BMW R1200RT and a KLR has the very same changer and he goes through a lot of tires. I have an ancient Coats 220 manual changer which was state of the art in bike shops three decades ago. Works for me.:yesnod:

I have a 14" car wheel, padded with a length of split heater hose. So far, it's worked on everything from 15" cruiser tires to the 21" front on my KLR.

Did your buddy's changer come with some sort of rim protection on the rim clamps and mount/demount bar? Did he have to add something? Do the rim clamps have some sort of lip to actually hold on to the rim?

That's the main thing that worries me about that changer. All we have is one photo, and from what you can see in the photo it does not seem to have these features. It would be OK on steel truck wheels where you don't care about the paint, but not the best idea on painted or powder-coated alloy wheels.

I know some folks with N-Mar or Cycle Hill changers also get one of these improved mount/demount bars:
