If you want to mingle with the cruiser crowd, spend the first weekend of 2012 in festive Sarasota. You can find lots of chrome-plated doo-dads to make your bike reflect more light and go slower. You can see lots of skin, plenty of it artificially and permanently colored. You can find stuff alleged to be food that is more amusing than nutritious.

But still, this is a worthwhile expedition for some of us. There will be a few dozen very esoteric and interesting vintage motorcycles, and a great variety of people being more cordial and polite than their rowdy appearance would at first suggest. For one thing, they have some very imaginative and comfortable ways to convey dogs. For another, they generously support charities.

I have been a participate the past couple of years. I usually have a pretty interesting time. Planning on going again this year. If anyone is interested in meeting someplace and checking out the festivities, let me know. I usually see a V Strom or two passing by. In addition to my V Strom, I also have a Honda Nighthawk 250. For some reason, the Nighthawk seems to strike up conversations at these types of events. Changing the subject, I see the V Strom rally is set for May 2012 at IronHorse. Looking forward to that also.

OK, I'll use my 250.

I have the ancestor to your Nighthawk 250. My 1984 CM-250 has a 233-cc engine like yours, but it has belt drive. It was driven through some Toronto winters, and hence was exposed to a lot of salt. With sufficient neglect, this experience implies a measure of rust, so my 250 doesn't get the same compliments yours earns.

I will try to be near Main and Lemon at noon on Saturday.
Maybe we can find some interesting things to do or watch or eat or drink.

Your presence here does not tell me whether we have met, so ...

I will wear a red ballcap. Under that I will wear my "bald old fart" disguise,
which has somehow become difficult to remove. If the weather is chilly,
I will wear a (mostly) white jacket saying COLORADO on the back;
otherwise, I will wear a bright orange shirt.

So you can meet me or avoid me, as you choose.
Happy New Year!
Keith
