Hello locals in the Great Plains area lol.

I am starting to plan a trip out to Yellowstone and the Badlands area in June of this year and was looking for some route advice.

I'm hearing that the roads from Thunder Bay, Ontario to yellowstone are pretty blah and I should use that area to make time.

Looks like the best route is going to be the interstate on 94 and then a bit on 90. How busy of an interstate is this? If I take it to make time are the spots or cities to avoid the interstate portion of the ride?

I'd like to avoid heavy traffic and anymore then multiple lanes (6+

They're busy, and MISERABLE on a bike. Seriously, North Dakota is awful. That's all I have to add about that. If I head west through the Dakotas, I trailer/put in van now, I hate it so much.

That being said, MN Highway 1 between Ely, MN and Finland, MN is one of the best motorcycle roads in MN, it might be worth the detour.

Through SD i preferred taking SR212 rather than I-90. Stopped in Sturgis to put and eye on that. Next morning to Custer SP - Iron Mountain Rd is excellent, then SR 385 over to Lead, then spearfish canyon, then over to Devil's mountain....try to make it to Sheridan Wy that night. I like SR 14a (rather than 14) over the big horn mountains.....really doesn't get much better than that....

I was told to avoid the oil work in the northern part when I left St Paul last summer. Too many wacko's doing oil work. I stayed on the interstate 90 and back roads to Cody. then through Jellystone.
With the oil price crash there might be better travel now?

For pete's sake. There is absolutely NO help in this request by your reply at all other than to vent. What you say is really void of details other than "you hate it". Apparently you have never traveled any of the two lane highways in North Dakota.

If you consider Yellowstone, consider going one day further and include Glacier NP. I am planning the same trip for this summer and that's the advise I got here. So we added a couple days and we will go north of the lakes and stay in Canada until we get to Glacier NP.

We also travelled through SD when we went to Sturgis a few years back. We took both I90 and rural roads. The rural roads were so rural, you could go any speed you wanted most of the time and no traffic. Some have significant miles between service, so watch out for gas before entering such a stretch. Beats fighting the trucks and their wind turbulences in the interstate. In the end I think no big difference in time or miles/day.

Rambouillet's comments are good and valid! Approach Yellowstone from the NE if you can. That's the least frequented entrance.

From the Black Hills to Yellowstone I like riding 14.. very rural, quiet, and some interesting roads. Make sure you cruise all the way around the Black Hills if you got the time, like do (north to south) 14A to 85 to 16 then back up 385. Beautiful roads. Don't miss Devils Tower on hiway 24 in Wyoming.. another nice bit of road. I also have used 212 across South Dakota.. anything is better than the I-state and the more rural roads have few trucks.
