Hi there guys. New to the VStrom world. Im coming off of a Gen 1 yamaha FZ1. My knees and back just are not happy on that bike any more and I also need to "slow" down a little. I have been looking at getting a Vstrom 650, as it seems to be the kind of bike that would really fit my needs. I found one here in town, thats a 2007 that has 92,000 miles on it, and I can get it for $2499. The bike is clean, runs good has all the up keep done to it. The owner gave me the "its highway miles" line, but other than that it seems legit. Is there anything that I should be concerned with? What kind of life span does this V-twin normally have. I do know some guys with 75k+ on there SV and still going strong, will the Vstrom version be as tough? Thanks for any help and input...

Maybe this will give you an idea of the Suzuki V-twin reliability.

And the Wee-Strom [DL650] has less issues than the Vee [DL1000], so as long as the bike has been well maintained you should have no problems with it for many more miles to come. :thumbup:

The engine design in the TL1000/Vee/Wee/Glee/SV650/Gladius has been around for a long long time.

Wish we could buy used ones that cheap here in Oz. :fineprint:

When I went down to AU I was amazed at the $20.00 six pack of victory bitter! A six pack at home of some small batch craft brewed beer is $8.00

and that was with a $1=$1 exchange rate!

If it has been looked after, I'm sure it will be fine with 92k on it.

My '07 has 75k and it has started to burn some oil, but other than that, it has no issues. And I have treated it quite miserably for all it's life.

I do think $2500 is a little high. Obviously regional differences come into play, but we recently sold my wife's 2004 650 with 55k on it for $2,000. $2500 might be ok if all the wear items are new/er - tires, brakes, chain, sprockets, and it has some healthy farkles.

I also had an FZ1 (2006) and have moved over to a 2012 650 Adventure, with a short-term 2009 KLR 650 between them. While I found the FZ1's ergos very comfortable, the Strom is much more so. And I also wanted to slow down from the FZ1, as I didn't really need to go 147 mph or whatever it could do; but I was tempted to take advantage of that available speed, even though I know my reflexes aren't what they used to be (I'm almost 64). There's plenty of speed in the DL650. I think you'll be happy with the Wee.

kawwikid, I would ask the seller for receipts/records for past "major" maintenance done. If seller can provide this, I would be a lot more comfortable buying than someone without any records. Even then, $2499 is high. Just to add, there are V-stroms out there for just a few hundred more dollars with several thousand less miles.

I have had no less than 30 Vstroms transition through my rental fleet at Northwest Motorcycle Adventures llc in Portland Oregon since 2007, and I got to tell you it is unbelievable but true, I had my first break down this year 2013, one of our 2008 models with just 38,000 miles on it had the alternator stator go out? not bad after 6 years of renting only vstroms my mileage on all my rental bikes would equal 4 trips to the moon and back, Other than that I have not had one mechanical dispatch reliability issues NONE !

Thanks for advise so far. I would love to buy your DL1000, but im why down here in Orlando, Fl. lol...I went and look at the bike and it is very clean. The owner has some of the service records, the latest for new chain, sprocket air filter and then one for general up keep at a service shop. The bike started fine and ran out good. Still on the fence about it. Im trying to get a Vstrom on a budget, $3200-$3400 is my top price range, and I need to stay in the florida area. My best bet would be someone looking for a Gen FZ1 that wants a swap, so I dont have worry about selling my bike..lol..
